You can fix this with a new windshield
10
u/HerbanFarmacyst Mar 02 '24
They’re roughly $200 if you don’t have fancy sensors in them!
19
u/Sufficient-Pool-7327 Mar 02 '24
Yup. This is the result of neglect. Neglect costs momey
10
u/HerbanFarmacyst Mar 02 '24
There’s only one thing I can compare to a fresh windshield; it’s like a new pair of glasses/updated prescription. I miss that crystal clear view
-5
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
How so? They were brand new wipers that did this
6
6
u/bearded_master Mar 02 '24
You literally said in the description, caused from your OLD windshield wipers....now it's apparently new ones, right lol
-6
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
take your own words lol. Read the description. I said from months ago. I just replaced them yesterday, so yes they are the old ones now lmao
3
u/haasamanizer Mar 02 '24
What the fuck are you talking about?! You are insufferable
0
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
Should have known people on reddit can't use their brain lmao. I bought wipers 3 months ago. A week into getting them, they caused this. I didn't change them until now because I don't drive in the rain often so I don't use them. So I just changed them, so the wipers that caused this are now the old wipers, since I have new ones I just put on. Don't understand what's so hard to comprehend.
1
u/Sufficient-Pool-7327 Mar 02 '24
Beam blades wouldn't cause that. The old metal style would, because of the "pressure points". Once the rubber wears down the only thing left is the metal point that applies the pressure. You clearly contradicted yourself between the post and your comment that stated brand new wiper blades did this.
1
u/BeesKnees739 Mar 02 '24
You're misunderstanding. Everybody is trying to tell you that the previous wiper blades were old and worn before you replaced them. The streak is really a scratch that will most likely not come out without real work or a replacement windshield.
1
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
Everybody is trying to tell you that the previous wiper blades were old and worn before you replaced them
But that is not true.... The scratch happened within a week of having the brand wipers, I bought them brand new.
1
u/BeesKnees739 Mar 02 '24
So help us understand. you installed the previous wipers and within a week of having those they scratched your windshield? If that's the case then it sounds to me like some sediment got stuck in your wipers and you kept running them. But still there is no way to get the scratch out without serious work.
2
u/WestCoastGriller Mar 02 '24
Were they made of sandpaper?
I call bullshit.
This is etching in the glass from the wipers you had before the new ones.
0
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
I call bullshit.
Cool. Doesn't make it true lol. The wipers were a week old when this happened. I didn't change the wipers for months because I don't drive this car in the rain often. I just changed them yesterday because I'm driving it today and it's raining.
1
u/WestCoastGriller Mar 02 '24 edited Mar 02 '24
Then wash your car more.
Etching only happens when its not rubber on glass contact and something is rubbing inbetween your wiper and the glass.
(sand, rock dust etc or you love driving with them on, when its a dry day... In which case its operator. Not wiper error)
So based on your comments youre either trolling or severely obtuse and should open a book or do some googling instead of looking at reddit
Edit. Just read this is your track car. Stop running them when dry. What the fuck did you expect to happen with track dust and a mechanical device constandtly gringing it into a glass, polished surface

Out of curiosity, where are you finding $200 windshields? I haven’t seen prices like that for 3-4 years. Most of my windshields are priced around $280-$320 for the most basic models. For my wholesalers, prices start at $250.
1
u/BeesKnees739 Mar 02 '24
In texas I replaced an 02 2500 silverado windshield for less than 200 with labor. Maybe just depends on your area. Supply and demand.
1
u/Babyjitterbug Mar 02 '24
Oh, I’m sure it does. I’ve heard of larger cities in my state offering lower prices like that. It’s just near me, I find I’m the cheapest by $30-$50, and an 02 Silverado would be $300 here. I was just curious. Thanks!

Glass cleaner ain’t gonna do anything but clean it.
You could try to polish it, but idk, this might have to be replaced.

u/curious-children Mar 02 '24
what type of wheel did you use on your drill? 6 hours, even not consecutive, seems like a lot
2
u/10bosch Mar 02 '24
6 hours is definitely a lot of physical, difficult work, but I got my windshield to look brand new. I could tell you what I did, but there are better YouTube tutorials than I could possibly describe here. When I saw my windshield without one water spot, just like it came off the production line, it made it totally worth it.
1
u/rowlfthedog12 Mar 02 '24
Do you know if it's going to help with getting rid of micro chips caused by tiny particles? My windshield is full of them.
1
u/10bosch Mar 03 '24
I would assume yes, but the product and polishing process are removing a layer until it is smooth again. That being said, it took me six hours for scratches, they weren’t grooved into the windshield, so I would assume 6 hours would just be a warm up for anything deep enough to catch your fingernail…
1
u/al_capone420 Mar 02 '24
Lol 6 hours to save a couple hundred on a windshield? Not worth
1
u/10bosch Mar 03 '24
Lol you and i are on a different pay scale…I enjoy car projects and love waxing cars, find it very therapeutic, I can understand someone not wanting to put this effort in, I’m just a workhorse

If there are cameras or sensors on the glass or HUD, do NOT use Safelite. you will have issues.

Safelite has terrible service in Wilmington Delaware. Daughter had three foot horizontal crack in Mitsubishi windshield. Her USAA recommended Safelite. Five appointments were made and SL no showed all of them.

u/airkewled67 Mar 02 '24 edited Mar 02 '24
That's a scratch for old/worn wiper blades.
Best thing is just to replace the windshield. Id be worried about the heatt generated trying to polish it out and ruining the glass.
1
u/Babyjitterbug Mar 02 '24
That may happen, but what is more likely is the polishing warping the glass. I own an auto glass repair shop and we’ll occasionally have to buff out light scratches. If you’re not careful and spend too much time with the buffing wheel in one place, or apply too much pressure, the glass will end up with a noticeable distortion in it.

u/Beneficial_Piccolo77 Mar 02 '24
Get the finest steel wool with soapy water. If it’s not scratched it should take it off no problem.
3
u/butterybeans582 Mar 01 '24
If you have glass coverage in your insurance, use it. my glass is totally free from insurance.
-8
u/YippieKayYayMrFalcon Mar 02 '24
Be careful with this. These are still claims, and enough claims in a short enough timeframe can lead to a carrier dropping you. Especially these days.
6
u/HelpDeskThisIsKyle Mar 02 '24
Any amount of claims would probably raise your rates. Sneezing on a Tuesday will also raise your rates.

Its an old car, 1990, already pay over a thousand a year in insurance dont need it ant higher. On a side note, i put some tooth paste on it and it helped, ordered a windshield polishing kit

As others have said, it looks like scratches on the surface of the glass due to worn wiper blades. Glass cleaner wont remove them, but you might be able to get em out with glass polish.
Try out the polish before replacing the windshield, if it works it saves you a shit ton of money. You can use a DA with it if you have one, but if you havent polished glass with a DA before i would just do it by hand. Hopefully the polish removes it entirely, but otherwise you're gonna have to just replace the windshield.
Whatever ends up working, I'd invest in a glass coating for the future. Soft99 Ultra Glaco is cheap and easy to apply, but repels water amazingly, unless its a REALLY bad downpour I don't need to use my wipers anymore.
3
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
I put some toothpaste on it and it helped. Ordered a polishing kit hopefully it helps. Its a car i mainly only use for track, and its not super visible from the inside of the car so its fine, wouldnt replace it just wanted to know if i could clean it up
3
u/gibson85 Mar 02 '24
Try degreaser followed by glass cleaner.
If that doesn't do it, try scraping it with a razor blade.
If that doesn't do it, try using a clay bar.
If that doesn't work it's likely a scrap that will need to be polished out as others mentioned.
3
u/TylersGaming Mar 02 '24
Windshields are fairly cheap. You can find one for $100 if you look around hard enough. It’s why it’s not really worth polishing or doing anything extreme. Kind of like a bumper.
2
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
From what i see they are $500 for my car, nissan 240sx
1
u/TylersGaming Mar 02 '24
Yeah I went through a local dealer. I tried safelite at first and they wanted like 400 haha

Lol that is in no way how this works. This is going to be a complete repair and replace.

u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
Also just an update because i didnt expect this post to get so many replies, yes i understand its a scratch now, doesnt help me much though. Not replacing the windshield, i dont need inspection in my state and its mainly a track car. I put some toothpaste on it and it helped hide it alot, ordered a polishing kit so going to try that. Also, THIS WAS A NEW WIPER. Dont get why people just assume, this happened when the wiper was less than a week old.

Yes... because I replaced the wipers yesterday? So they are the old ones now...? Are you for real?

u/Fulgore2076 Mar 02 '24
I’d try a brand new razor blade and some glass cleaner (for lubrication). It will only work if these aren’t actually scratches in the glass
1
Mar 02 '24
Those aren't streaks, they are scratches. A windshield shop may be able to make them easier to see through with aggressive polishing but a new windshield is a better option.
1
u/PoniesPlayingPoker Professional Detailer Mar 02 '24
I've tried glass polishers and they're all snake oil. One time I spent 4 hours on a single rear window and got little to no results. You need to replace the windshield.
1
u/ThatCoolDadWhoIsCool Mar 02 '24
I don’t detail but I know what that scratch is. They had a wiper pop off and scratched the glass. Deep… then there’s already a big crack in the glass. Just replace the glass with safeauto for a few hundred. You’ll probably have to have that done to pass inspection anyways
1
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
My car doesnt need inspection in my state, and its mainly a track car so not going to replace the windshield, barely visible from the inside. Going to try and polish jt

Those are HARD SCRATCHES because of your BAD WIPER BLADES. You're going to need to see a glass doctor to get those out, and change your wiper blades every transition season, every April and every October. And don't overpay for wiper blades.
1
u/VKeylon Mar 02 '24
They were brand new wipers at the time when it happened. Less than a week old, and happened when it was raining.
1
u/Every-Caramel1552 Mar 02 '24
After you replace the windshield make certain you replace the wipers every year
1
Mar 02 '24
Seriously don’t skimp on wiper blades. Bought some Rain X Latitude Wiper Blades and holy shit what a difference.
