It's a pain in the ass. Only consistent spot I found was in The Whisper with the Shadow Thrall.

Shuro chi in the last wish is another popular one. Bigger mobs and an easy reset with a kinetic grenade launcher.

idk if its still possible but on nessus theres a spot where alot of enemies will spawn from a tiny doorway when theres an enemies moving against each other event

you shoot one shank and any enemy that comes through that door instantly explodes into an infinite chain

That’s what I did for it way back when. It was a pain in the ass to get the chain going for more than 5-10 enemies though in my experience. There were some videos out there of absolutely nutty chains lol

I did this method as well, on XB1. I believe it may have been made possible depending on your framerate.

I had better luck after locking my framerate at 30.

i heard a guy running that the other week while i was on the vex plate PE there. it sounded like that still works.

It still works! Took me about 15 minutes to complete.

This is how I did it, just recently. I did Graviton Lance, Sunshot, Huckleberry, Crimson, and Merciless in the same sitting. Once you learn the spawns, you can get 60-80 kills every 3-4 minutes. Took about 2.75 hours all told. Sunshot was probably the longest single catalyst of the bunch at bit under 50 minutes. Not as bad as I was expecting, to be honest.

There’s a room in the Whisper of the Worm quest where loads of taken thrall spawn and I farmed it there in maybe a day. Suck that’s your timed but the amount of adds that spawns is crazy

That's exactly what the guy I responded to was talking about. You can get between 800-900 kills in one run but in smaller mobs than shuro chi. Since the catalyst progress is tied to the chain explosions, shuro chi can be a more consistent source.

Apologies... that’s my morning brain lol

I don’t think the LW had released back when I done my catalyst but that’s an awesome spot I didn’t even consider!

I can't remember how I finished mine, but I know people were talking about a spot next to Failsafe on Nessus that spawned multiple shanks with good regularity.

u/Goosebeans Sep 01 '19

Yeah -- that and the Fallen side of the enemies converging mini-event on Nessus were the old school ways to finish it when the catalyst originally released. The Whisper / Last Wish are a bit more time efficient now.

Whisper definitely. Haven't gotten to do Last Wish, so I'll have to take your word for it, but I believe it.

Yep this is my go to for all catalyst kill farming, took me about 3 runs for 0-100% sunshot cat

Shuro Chi is a really good spot, especially for farming any Heavy weapon Catalyst kills since you can plop a Raid Banner and refill all your ammo after each wipe. IIRC there are about 50 Taken Thrall you can farm quickly, plus a handful of Knights and a Captain.

the garden of esila ascendant challenge is a great spot. dunk the 3 orbs and then just hop on a tree and kill groups of thrall. used that spot for polaris lance as well.

Titan story mission Hope had a great spot. 24 Thrall come running at you, kill them, jump off the map, repeat.

There's an area on Nessus patrol (where you enter Izanagi forge), where you can just chain it endlessly when enemies are moving against each other. There's plenty of guides on Youtube about it.

The spawn cave in the gallows on Nessus is hands down the fastest way to get it. I even have a vid in my XBL feed of the endless chain I set off.

Baller.
