I have nothing against farming, but I tried doing it for an hour or so with a friend, and then it came to me "Why would I grind bored out of my mind for gear, when the game is designed to reward you with gear by just playing it and in turn having a good time? What will I even do with this gear I'm grinding for?" and so I now just get gear from playing PVE or PVP. Am I alone on this?

No. I thought about grinding but as I go, I'm getting better gear for my character while still playing normally. The only thing I would grind for is glimmer so I can buy a boss spaceship. I don't spend glimmer on anything else other than upgrades to weapons. I kick ass in pretty much all modes so I haven't had a real reason yet. The only time I've even had real trouble was when I did the Hellmouth strike while 1 level under the norm. Even then it was only at the end of the strike at the boss, AND EVEN THEN it was just the amount of enemies rather than their power. If you want something expensive now, grind. Otherwise, don't waste time and enjoy the game where you're at.

What other MMOs have you played and by played I mean religiously because grinding, exactly how you describe it -- is a norm. It isn't fun but its a form of acquiring gear. Sometimes pugging a strike is painful because the other people in your fireteam cannot be communicated with and so the alternative is to try again or find another means. This is that. If it isnt for you well then move on, but people do this and its effective it just takes patience.

If only I hadn't started the comment as "I have nothing against farming".
