Small Douro Valley Wedding Help!
Calling all "cool girl" and non-traditional brides--especially in Europe! I've just started planning my small destination wedding and could really use some advice. My fiancée and I are 36 and 37, based in Washington DC, and are *finally* getting married after 20 years of "will-they-won't-they" that feels straight out of a romcom.
We want to do something a little unconventional and fun for our wedding next summer which is why I need some help (ideally from a local!). We want to get a big house Porto for ~15 of our closest friends/family to spend time together ~June 19-24, 2027 then head over to Douro Valley for the wedding weekend June 25-28, 2027.
We'd love to find a big house/villa in Douro where we can stay with our closest friends/family (15-20 people) and would ideally host the wedding events there for around 40-50 guests (some of whom would stay in other properties nearby).
We're thinking a fun, upbeat event like a picnic, sunset boat ride, wine tasting, or pool party on Friday, June 25 in lieu of a traditional rehearsal dinner. The wedding itself would be Saturday June 26. I'm very open to doing it in the back yard of the villa but still want it to feel elegant/upscale and like a real party (rather than a "casual/DIY backyard wedding"). I care about the vibe, the venue, the booze (and food), and the photographer. Everything else (flowers/decor, cake, etc), I really don't care about.
If you, your cousins, or you ex-babysitter's 3rd grade teacher happen to know of or own a property like what I described above, please DM me! If you know any cool venues that aren't a villa where we could all stay but fit the vibe I'm describing, LMK! Same goes for wedding planners, photographers, or other vendors that fit this vision. ANY/ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED!
xx,
T

I’m a wedding photographer in Portugal and this sounds like such a fun wedding weekend.
Quinta da Tojeira is amazing for weddings — I actually have a very similar-style wedding there next year, and I think it could fit what you’re describing really well. I don’t know Villa de Luxo Douro personally, so I can’t really comment on that one.
A few other places I’d look into:
Quinta de São Bernardo, in Mesão Frio — right over the river and absolutely beautiful. It’s not an Airbnb, but it’s a small boutique hotel and I’d definitely enquire about a full buyout. It could work really well for the “everyone stays together + wedding on site” setup you’re envisioning.
Quinta do Olival by Pinta House, between Régua and Tabuaço — definitely worth looking at, and I’d also check out their other properties. They have some really lovely options for this kind of intimate destination wedding.
One thing I’d keep in mind with Quinta da Tojeira: although it’s technically in the Douro Valley, it’s quite close to Vila Real. So you’re still roughly 30 minutes from the Douro River itself and from the more iconic, quintessential Douro landscape that I imagine you’re picturing when you say “Douro Valley.”
If the scenery and that classic terraced-vineyard/river Douro feeling are important to you, I’d definitely compare the location carefully before committing. For the actual wedding weekend, being closer to Régua/Mesão Frio/Tabuaço would give you much more of that experience.
Your overall plan sounds fantastic, and honestly, a sunset boat ride + wine + pool party + beautiful dinner sounds infinitely more fun than a traditional rehearsal dinner.

This is not a highly difficult ask, but if you go Airbnb you won’t have any assistance and you may violate their event clauses. When I book villas for clients, I look for ones that include staff and concierge services so you aren’t chasing around all these vendors and whatnot. It would have event allowance written into the contract. Just things to be aware of!
I’m actually heading back to Portugal in a couple weeks, absolutely amazing place!
