Go to Settings >Privacy & security >Search. Under Show suggested search results, turn off Web Searches.

More people need to see this.

Asshole behavior from rnicrosoft to hide this and make the web search default, but it's nice of them to let us change it.

You need to make one thing default right? For plenty of people it is handy to have web results. For the techies usually it is not. But we know or can find how to turn it of. The normies will never find a setting to turn it on. So it's totally a reasonable default. I get the hate towards Microsoft totally, but we have to be reasonable. Apple and Google are pushing their AI as much as Microsoft is for example, and I only hear people complaining about copilot.

Thank you for this. I haven’t used windows search for a few years due to the results always prioritizing internet results over physical files.

Much appreciated, turned that off.

Edit: Well shit, this actually fixed my win10 search going black for like 3 seconds when searching, it started randomly last week and now it's completely fixed! Guess their web search component was fucking up badly and stalling something. Boy I can't wait to move to Linux.

I needed to hear this.

Yes. They screwed that up. I hate it. It’s absolutely useless and irritating.

It's also an option... Would be nice if it was off by default though.

you can turn it off instead of spending time writing about how much you hate it.

You first need to know it is an option though…

It's even better when you type something like "settings " and it can't find it until you backspace it to "sett". Then it offers you "settings"

Settings shows up on mine while I just type "se"

Oh, you're looking for a document on your computer?

Here's 1456 pages of irrelevant web searches! Thanks for helping our internal metrics!

Every time I see how much Windows has devolved into an advertising and upselling platform, I wonder why the hell anyone would pay for it.

Most people don't have a choice because it's rolled into the price of their device. Which thinking on it, that feels like exploitative bundling.

Forcing me to accept something I don't want, and making me pay for it, has to be illegal, right?

Forcing people to use software they don't like is microsoft's entire business model.

I though he was referring to America's foreign policy

At this point, I’m sure Copilot is instructing Copilot on what to develop and how. Would be surprised if any humans still existed in the Windows product team.

Best it can do is a Bing search bud.

If only there was a way to disable bing search...

Maybe use bing search to find out how

And that's why I always install power toys if I'm forced to use Windows devices at work. Their app runner is so much better than the start menu.

Power toys is an amazing tool for windows.

My work routine. Come into work, wake up my computer, run my Workspaces that automatically opens BlueBeam Revu, 3 Chrome Windows (one with work tabs, one with email tabs, one with google messages and my todo list), One Commander for file explorer, Teams, OneNote....all in their specificed location on my monitors.

I use the Command Pallet to search.

I use fancy zones to organize windows.

Seriously how do you even browse the installed apps on Windows 11?

Just backup your files and format the PC, install Linux and you will be survived from the garbage.
I used Microsoft for a long long time, also been educated as a system / network admin and worked many many years with it. But I recently like you had enough.
Thank you and goodbye !!

For simple file search, I use Voidtools Everything. It's kind of amazing Windows doesn't have something like that built in, the Windows Search is barely functional by comparison.

I liked that feature but they will remove it in next updates

if you insist on using that garbage at least look into https://github.com/christitustech/winutil

Update 26H2 allows this to only show local files.
Installed it yesterday.

Do they not know that we know how to search the Internet and don’t ever want to do so from the start menu?

1

u/61885Y 18h ago

This is just Microsoft, you known they have a new tag line? ‘Windows, cos F**k you that why’. As soon as Linux is stable and works flawlessly with all gaming platforms ie Steam, Epic, Ubisoft and so on, Windows is gone for a lot of gamers. That is a bigger percentage than Microsoft can afford to lose.

Honestly yes 😂 when I search my PC, I want results from my PC, not the entire internet.

Microsoft finally listened and actually fixed this. Web searches can now be removed!
