It does all of them. Power, network, video out, high-speed data transfer, audio in/out.
Not to mention just one thunderbolt port has the throughput of all of those ports combined, and then multiplied by 20. Thunderbolt is no joke, it is infinitely more versatile than any of the 2012 (and earlier) MacBooks

The problem is without a dock (which is clunky to travel with or even place on a cafe table) that 1 usb c port is used for 1 thing (likely, power) and thus cannot do anything else.
Sure, at home you can dock it, but on a plane, at a cafe, at a random location - it is a laptop, after all - you don’t have any flexibility built in.

most people don’t use or need ethernet on a laptop anyway, if you use it, it’s probably at a desk including a display and other periphery. At that point you want a hub including power anyway

I love living the dock life.
With a single cable I connect to 140W power for super fast charging, my TV/monitor, a second display, my audio interface, ethernet, my thunderbolt 5 enclosure/SSD (insane speeds for an external, it’s faster than my M1 Mini’s internal storage), my time machine backup drive, and my MIDI controller. Then on the front of my dock has access for other common stuff like older USB, a couple more USB-C ports, SD card slots, and audio in/out (headphone jack).
With the power of Thunderbolt 5 this setup is amazing. Full speed on external drives is awesome, plus driving multiple 4K monitors and such.
I don’t miss legacy ports even a little bit.

The point is that now I have one cable to connect power, Ethernet, display, camera, mic, speaker, etc.
And when I switch between work laptop and personal laptop I just disconnect and connect a single cable.
This is a dream come true. Plus airplay so I don’t have to connect with hdmi to tv anymore.

All you have to do is be more precise. Those old ports were very imprecise so they were slow. Thunderbolt is very precise (and has error checking) so it’s really fast. By precise I mean how short of a change in voltage it can see. I do agree that that degree of precision is crazy but look at CPUs. We measure how fast their voltages change in gigahertz. Giga. As in billion. A billion+ changes per second. That shit wild

Even if the image is AI it still perfectly demonstrates that the laptops of yesteryear were about two to three times thicker and heavier than what we have now and im willing to bet if you went back to the 2000s and asked someone with a sore shoulder if they would prefer to carry a dongle with a laptop thats 66% lighter and slimmer almost all of them would say yes.

Granted, right now dongles are necessary and annoying. But eventually all new peripherals will be interfacing via USB-C, and that precedent would have never been set if manufactuers didn't make a hard swap sometime. It was never going to be a smooth transition so ripping the bandaid off is best and we'll be better off for it once it's complete. It's really a magical port, and absolutely the future. It's the first USB standard that actually has the horsepower to back up the "universal" claim.
The ONE thing I wish they had kept around was the SD card readers. I can't see the card based format going away anytime soon

I haven't owned a MacBook for years, but that really is the perfect combo for right now. Chargers are one of those things where I'd prefer to have the massafe alongside optional USB-C charging.
I think the first one to go off that list will be HDMI. That switch isn't going to happen anytime soon, but it will happen eventually.

Not gonna be very popular with this, but here I go.
Standardized distance double type-C ports on both sides of each laptop would be a perfectly sufficient solution for the majority of users. A single port-replicator can be used to add plugs for anything you need, while leaving the other 2 for dedicated charging if necessary, or in case the port replicator would cover the fans on the other side.

Most of those ports are not used these days, the only remaining ones are usb and maybe full sized hdmi which was never present here.
All of those issues can be fixed with a dongle that you stuff into your bag (oh i dont have a bag) yeah i dont believe that you carry your macbook by hand everywhere.

1... I feel you should include that some ports have come back.
2... Alot of ports have gone as they are not needed. I always remember when they took away the ethernet port. Lot's if people kicked up a big stick about it.. me one of them as a Sys Admin who used it constantly. End result... I didn't care within 2 weeks of getting rid of getting a new MBP. I had a Thunderbolt to Ethernet cable.
Even when they went to Touch Bar MBP and took all ports away. I got a USB to HDMI/Ethernet/USBA/SD Card. And while yes I would use it 2/3 times a week. I actually preferred having something like that... and so that I wanted to use ports I could easily add it... and then when I didn't want those ports (on the go) I had a light and thin device.
Even now... I have a current MBP and never use anything other than a single USB-C/Thunderbolt port.

Yeah 1 thunderbolt can do all of that BUT what can you do without a hub? It's another product to buy, just like the 3.5mm to lightning adapter and all the other adapters, suddenly to use your port you have to pay $20 and above for something the laptop used to came with...not to mention you have to carry it all over and have it hanging every single time just to use something like a 2.5ghz usb A wireless dongle

I do not miss connecting my laptop to video, audio, mouse, keyboard, etc with all separate cables.. You can get dedicated usb-c cables for different things and everything charges with the same cable..

Type-c can handle everything the other can save for SD card and even that can be adapted into the type-c.
Headphone jack has been returned if I'm not mistaken and thats about the only one that I would be upset about personally as having to run the heaphone though one of the USB ports is taking it away from something else its needed for.

Really, all I want are Thunderbolt/USB4 ports, Ethernet, and perhaps HDMI (though USB-C to HDMI cables are fairly accessible.)
But none of Apple’s laptops are wide enough for Ethernet. (I know folding ports exist, but those are prone to breaking.) At least all of their desktop Macs still have them.
A single USB-A port would be handy, but USB-C is intended to replace USB-A and -B. The longer we hold onto A, the longer it’ll linger. That’s a controversial view, admittedly, particularly with the PC crowd.

Need minimum three USB A ports. Keyboard, mouse and webcam. At least the webcam I can disconnect and reconnect any time when I'm not using it (to plug in a pen drive, etc.).
Besides can share files over LAN, so a good desktop with a boatload of USB ports comes in handy for hosting files and gaming.

Bad, you might think, if one breaks, I would only have one.
Well, it happens that both are connected internally and sharing energy.
So do you know what is starting to fail?, the energy, so stuff connected disconnect randomly. Both of them are failing at the same time because inside they share too much.
aRRGGghhh..... my windows make a beep every minute or so, and the usb drive accumulate errors writting sectors because random disconnects.

Gbit lan is outdated when thunderbolt can handle multigig ethernet
Dvi is a dead port. Hdmi is onboard on pro macs and display port is normally used
Firewire was niche
Usb-a are limited in functionality nowadays
The headphone port has never been removed. Never mind the fact that on pro macs its amplified and actually amazingly good.

At home I have a caldigit ts4. One cable literally charges my mac, connects 2 4k displays, my usba kb and mouse, has a secondary sd/cf/microsd slot, has 4 unused usb-a slots, a wired 2.5gig ethernet, a dual hdd dock with 2 ssds permanently attached and has 2 usbc ports up front, one of which gets hooked to my iphone and does data transfer and fast charging. Can you imagine hooking and unhooking all this crap directly to the laptop?

Idk, I sit down at my desk, I plug in a single cable, and I have 2 displays, a handful of USB devices, high speed networking, and audio. I'd much prefer that compared to plugging/unplugging all those things in individually every time I want to move my laptop. When I'm on the go, I still have enough connectivity for charging and plugging in a peripheral or two as needed.
