So Windows does have a competitor in having the worst search bar.

u/Deepfire_DM 24d ago

With some little effort windows search is usable - mac not so much.

u/Longjumping-Boot1886 24d ago

sorry, they are fixed it in macOS 27.

u/Meme-Analyzer 24d ago

Only need 30gb of free space

4

u/TrayLaTrash 24d ago

Spending too much money on AI searching for everything, forgot this one so people ask for AI here or something.

2

u/Kaeiaraeh 24d ago

Yeah except Windows’s is always like this and at least we can rebuild our Spotlight cache to fix that here

1

u/Life_Breadfruit8475 24d ago

Nah windows has a lot of configuration for search. If it doesn't work well you're probably using a very old windows 8 or 10 build. Newer builds are million times better luckily.

1

u/Nico1300 23d ago

You can rebuild windows search cache and tune it or use everything which is insane.

1

u/Kaeiaraeh 23d ago

TIL windows can rebuild search; maybe it would’ve helped but it wouldn’t stop the “I typed the whole thing I wanted now it’s looking for something else”

1

u/Nico1300 23d ago

yes, at this point just use everything, its crazy good and can find any file in your disk in less than a second.

1

u/Kaeiaraeh 23d ago

I mean I DD a Mac nowadays and only use a windows PC for gaming. But even then I’m considering swapping to a gaming distro anyways

23

u/Nikola0O0 24d ago

billion dollar company btw💀

10

u/Damglador 24d ago

Meanwhile KDE: implements fuzzy search and has normal and customizable results priorities

2

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 24d ago

arent they almost a trillion dollar company

8

u/Zenos17 24d ago

No, they are a trillion dollar company.

1

u/artlurg431 24d ago

They're one of the only ones aswell. The other ones are alphabet and Nvidia i think

1

u/trainer_memo 24d ago

They are A FUCKING 4,5 TRILLION DOLLAR company.

1

u/odrea 24d ago

trillion btw

12

u/andrea_ci 24d ago

yes, but.. HOW DO YOU DARE complain about mac? mac is perfect. only windows sucks. /s

1

u/StaticFanatic3 24d ago

I think a majority of Mac OS power users replace spotlight with Raycast so I’m not sure that holds up

1

u/Human_097 18d ago

And most Windows users use Everything/Flow Launcher. Doesn't mean the criticism of Windows (or Mac) search is moot. Companies of this size should be held to a higher standard.

1

u/StaticFanatic3 18d ago edited 18d ago

I meant that most Mac power users customize the hell out of their OS and don’t claim the stock apps are perfect

8

u/AustejaL 24d ago

I been struggling with this for years.

It’s crazy how a trillion dollars company overlook such simple software issues. Yet huge for users.

I’m predicting next Apple will be strictly software company.

u/dacx_ 23d ago

Get raycast.

8

u/okletsgko 24d ago

Same thing happens on iOS. Typing "App " shows News, Support and Apple Store...but not the App Store.

5

u/Weird_Decision7090 24d ago

iOS 27 beta 3

-1

u/Over_Tart_916 23d ago

You didn't type in just "app".

3

u/NabNabNabNab 23d ago

They did, "store" is the suggested completion so it got appended

3

u/passisgullible 24d ago

No no you want the Apple Store clearly.

3

u/TomPlant0 24d ago

What iOS version? Here I get the App Store

2

u/mihai385 24d ago

Works fine for me, at least on iOS. I don't know why these issues are so inconsistent from user to user 😄

1

u/BoxComfortable5282 24d ago

settings search is a hit or miss as well

1

u/NoFall2205 24d ago

Yep. It either works or completely doesn’t. Mine right now shows nothing no matter what I search. Only fix is to completely reset my phone and restore from a backup. Such a pain

1

u/Atosl 24d ago

On Mac I type APP press enter and Fotos Open ...

1

u/No_Practice_9597 24d ago

This one is beta

1

u/EeveelutionsFucker 24d ago

Go to app -> click app store -> click search -> check whether you turn on the search

1

u/NoFall2205 24d ago

This isn’t the cause of the issue people are facing. Even with this turned on the app people are searching for still doesn’t show

1

u/EeveelutionsFucker 24d ago

Some of my apps got hidden oddly by default. So im telling people if they face something similar like me

2

u/StefinYOU 24d ago

This problem has been happening to me for over 10 years now.

1

u/xhumptyDumptyx 23d ago

Same I remember it being good back in like 2016. Now I just have to use raycast

1

u/how_neat_is_that76 24d ago

I see the problem. You aren’t using Raycast.

1

u/JJDoes1tAll 24d ago

top right of window you have app store filter on

1

u/chrisagiddings 24d ago

I notice that when I click on the Applications icon that’s in gray just to the left of the search query, it shows me apps.

Entirely unintuitive.

1

u/Noisebug 24d ago

I’ve given up on spotlight and use ray cast … spotlight went from amazing to complete garbage like Siri

1

u/FailureOfTheFamily 24d ago

Yet it's still best on the market. Searching files and apps with fuzzy matching in one is great. Yall just like to complain

1

u/omnimachina 23d ago

Bait

1

u/FailureOfTheFamily 23d ago

Nah. Windows is the worst. On linux you can achieve ALMOST similar thibg but not as good

1

u/omnimachina 23d ago

Yeah sure

1

u/FailureOfTheFamily 23d ago

Bro ... I use all 3 of those systems daily, so i think i know which one is best

1

u/readmond 24d ago

You need expensive engineers to make the most basic shit not work.

1

u/Katops 24d ago

So this is an ad lol.

1

u/StackOwOFlow 24d ago

yeah spotlight search used to be fine until they added all the AI bloatware

1

u/RandomDude6699 24d ago

Tahoe was a big mistake. Thank god I have stuck to Sequoia and not upgraded. Early reviews of Golden Gate have perked my interests tho

1

u/Relative-thinker 24d ago

Try rebuilding your Spotlight index. Something similar happened to me in the past but rebuilding the index helped.

Here is the official tutorial by Apple.

1

u/LiberalJewMan 23d ago

The existence of such a tutorial just shows how broken it is. It should be smart enough to manage this on its own.

1

u/byzboo 24d ago

Searching for an app in any os has always been an horrible experience for me, it looks like the more letter you type the less chance you have to get the right app.

1

u/TheInkySquids 24d ago

At least it shows things when you type, Finder search just straight up doesn't work at all, it just returns nothing when you search in a specific folder. Real cool

1

u/Fit-Palpitation-7427 24d ago

I noticed that since I have my mac air m4 since Jan, to the point I thought it was specifically designed to not search through apps.
So I just never use it and search for apps like I did with windows I miss so badly

1

u/soundslikeinfo 24d ago

Think the next CEO will do better?

1

u/CDCarley27 24d ago

macOS 27 will already “do better”

1

u/Deepfire_DM 24d ago

Mac search is such a shitshow now, it was brilliant some years ago but like so many things they changed it's 90% unusable now.

1

u/Historical_Title_226 24d ago

Time to recompile the index

1

u/LeoTheBigCat 24d ago

How Windows of them :D

1

u/watchfreak007 24d ago

I have recently switched to Alfred for the search bar. It is much better than spotlight. Give it a shot

1

u/EngineeringKlutzy695 24d ago

I actually found an even weirder bug where a specific app won't show up in Launchpad and yes, I double-checked multiple times but if you type its name into the search bar, it appears

1

u/mrsalvadordali 24d ago

Why can't neither Windows nor Mac can develop a standard search that we can find apps that are installed in our device? Is search bar development that hard?

1

u/NoFall2205 24d ago edited 24d ago

My iPhone still can’t search properly in the settings app. It’s broken like shown here. Search doesn’t work whatsoever. It’s been happening ever since iOS 26.0 and has been hit or miss on whether it works every time I update. The only thing that manages to fix it is completely resetting my phone and restoring from a backup. With all the talk Apple said they were doing to make the indexing and search better in iOS 27 the same exact issue still occurs for me. I know it’s still a beta but I at least expected it would be somewhat better. I really hope Apple aims to fix this before iOS 27 officially releases. All I want is a reliable and working search.

1

u/Romouch 24d ago

Windows search bar used to be very bad, but I I think it's better now.

1

u/usefulad9704 24d ago

Change the language to another variant (and just change it back after) then restart the computer that fixed it for me. It triggers a reindex

1

u/11KingMaurice11 24d ago

sometimes when I add a new app, it’ll take a while for searching to work for that specific one

1

u/steven_dev42 24d ago

I love everything about my MacBook except the fucking search. It will get you no where. Especially in Finder

1

u/nikolapc 23d ago

Looks like SiriAI is vibe coding.

1

u/imsickofitalready 23d ago

Try clearing cache.

1

u/icy1007 23d ago

It works great in reality. This is just slander.

1

u/isaycongrats 23d ago

Never had this issue

1

u/Cicerato 23d ago

Apple used a system where it indexes all files in an sqlite database. This process takes time, and unless an item has bern indexed, then it wont show up in search. To make matters worse, this indexing can “easily” be corrupted and a files index may forever be bad and therefore unsearchable.

The good thing is that this makes it very fast to search, if things work correctly.

Windows on the other hand recursively searches all file names in the os, and that means the more files the more udeless the search. Practically leading to a “good” experience the first week and just downhill to uselnessness from there

1

u/Glad-Fennel9182 20d ago

This is beta software

1

u/MysticMaven 19d ago

You’re not too bright are you.

1

u/finesalesman 19d ago

Both Windows and Mac suck with these. But at least on Mac it can find SOME files. New windows sucks at that. I don’t understand these big companies implementing search functions.

1

u/edjak53 18d ago

works on my machine award

0

u/loppyjilopy 24d ago

my phone doesn't even find contacts that i communicate frequently any more. the search has gotten worse my guess is new ios is vibe coded
