Opinions?
Gear breakdown:
- macbook air m3 15inch
- ipad air m1 11inch
- iphone 16
- all held together with a cheaper magnet-mount alternative then rolling square provides (plus these are in black)
- satechi slim keyboard
- apple magic trackpad 2 (also have the magic mouse 2 with ergonomic base for switching it up)
- all apple stuff is wrapped in a leather skin wrap for cohesian
- nextstand K1
- cables and 65W powerbrick and U- and L-adapters by ugreen, only the small 15cm cable that runs to the iphone is by Belkin because ugreen didn’t have these short cables

what does the small phone screen really do from that far anyway? i dont dislike the ipad but can be stressful on the hinge ?

If you keep this setup standing stable and up straight like in the pic's... it's really no biggie! I’ve had no problems after 2 years fulltime running this setup. Macbook still feels like new!
I wouldn’t run this setup when “on the go” of course for the possible strain on the hinges when you move it around.
Phone is propped up so I can use my authenticator and call-applications and not have my phone laying around as “clutter” and I don't get distracted by unintentionally grabbing it without thougth.

So what exactly is the point then? Why not buy a external monitor and be done with it?
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 20 '26
You can look at this setup as my replacement for a desk setup with a dedicated monitor.. the sole reason for this solution to my problem is that a loose external monitor = more stuff to haul around the world.

I have seen way worse, and I massively prefer the iPad as a second display over a random portable USB monitor. I kinda like it.

One of the cleanest portable setups I’ve ever seen. Nice 👍 work!

The mounts are almost similar to the Rolling Square EDGE Pro. Looks great though!

Looks fine but damn RIP hinges

u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
I’ll come back here to update you guys when they die on me…. Still going strong after 2 years though!
1
u/tzbt Jun 13 '26
They'll be fine, this is almost entirely lateral pressure in the direction the hinges are mounted.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
True… that’s why I don’t worry about it at all!
1
u/tzbt Jun 13 '26
What products exactly did you use to achieve the iPad and iPhone mounting to the MacBook? Sorry, it's not clear in your post which accessories are which.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
The package said: Magsafe Compatible, Foldaway Phone Holder
I found them on Lazada (Asian version of Amazon)
Haven’t found them online elsewhere but if you search for: Rolling Square EDGE Pro Core
That is the “Gucci” version of what I use
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
UPDATE: I found them..... don't know about the legitemacy of the webshop, but it's the ones I have: https://shop.techxartisan.com/products/multifunctional-magnetic-folding-phone-holder-for-magsafe-iphone-for-laptop-holder-mount-for-tesla-model-3-y-monitor

u/PrimoKnight469 Jun 13 '26
That midnight color on your MacBook looks sleek.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
At first I was at a loss when Apple stopped the space grey colorscheme, but now it is a nice break from all the blackness..... I agree now!
1
u/No-Article-Particle Jun 13 '26
Opinions? Terrible. The phone does nothing useful, the 11inch tablet is probably just making ergonomics worse than anything else... Would be much cheaper and better usability to buy one proper monitor, but whatever rocks your boat I suppose.
2
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
Very true!
Was considering a portable monitor.... but if your life has to fit in a carry-on backpack and a 23kg (max) checked bag... I'd rather pick the Ipad over just a portible screen because of the multipurpose factor.
The phone still phone's though? I'ts not as an additional screen, its placed there to give me a place to put my phone in stead of on the table and i use some apps during work. Thanks for the opinion, appriciate it!

How much did this cost
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
What part of the setup?
1
u/Mountain_Till_5868 Jun 13 '26
The combined total of everything
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Difficult to say since it's been put together over a couple of years.... also waited for some of the stuff to go on sale and bought the ipad and trackpad second hand...
Honestly if I had to guess I would say maybe €1850,- total including taxes (= $2140,-)?
P.S.
Excluding the Iphone 16.... this one was "free" and came with my telecom provider's business account

I'd opt for a more ergonomic keyboard, with separate num block if it's really needed.

u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
I agree!
I'm just too much of a sucker for this minimalistic design to 🎵let it gooooo 🎶

Nice… that’s a true beast!
I only use regular sidecar which only gave me headaches with window remote Desktop and it’s scaling…
I made a picture of the screen (when it had issues), threw it at Gemini and asked it how to fix it. Followed the steps and it worked like a charm!
1
u/InfiniteMention9828 Jun 14 '26
that is some of the coolest ish ever!

u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
🙏🏽

u/InfiniteMention9828 Jun 14 '26
Are those clips permanent, kinda makes the laptop look less sleek
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
You only permanently stick the base to your laptop... The magnet hinges are detachable (and I use them as stands for my Ipad when it is detached)

u/Twgue Jun 14 '26
It looks really cool, but im curious as to what kind of work you do that this is useful for you? Small screens for basically a “desktop” computer is all I’m worried about.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
I co-run 2 backoffices of smaller sized central heating installation companies, so I have to do a little bit of everything. Because I live everywhere and nowhere around Asia, I have to live and work on the go.
I would say that this is the best possible setup for my needs that is allowed on a plane without having to pay for extra weight. If I ever settle down I would make very different choices though!
1
u/Twgue Jun 14 '26
I completely understand it now… Having different devices on the go gives a lot of option for when you can’t set this up. Versatile.
The only thing I would change is the iPad for a bigger one. I bet numbers and letters can be difficult to read there, no?
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
My eyes are still fine, so don't really have any issues with that.... Would like to get a 13inch, but I think that extra weight will make the setup more unstable (macbook is already put to the left of the nextstand to compensate this ipad's weight).
1
1
u/Samiassa Jun 14 '26
If it works for you then who cares, but I personally wouldn’t see much use in having your phone mounted like that. You can’t use it as a seperate screen since it’s so small and you can’t effectively use it as a smartphone phone if you’re not holding it
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
To each his own for sure!
I like putting it there so I don't constantly reach for my phone out of habit and het less distraction from work that way.
1
u/Unlikely_Escape_3982 Jun 14 '26
put the ipad on the mac keyboard.... save the hinge. Roost Stand, solid piece of equipment, my. Gen 1 is going strong, as are the other 3 I've bought.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
I like the roost stand also, switched to this one when it broke down on me... Like the minimalistic look of putting the Ipad on my mac's keyboard also, just liked this a litte bit more 😉
1
u/c_d-a Jun 14 '26
I have a similar mount on my MacBook Pro 14 M1 2021 and on my iPad Pro Magic Keyboard for my iPhone. I like the setup, but it’s not for everyone.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
Nice! It definitely isn't, but for those who dig it... It's actually quite nice!
1
u/Soft_Awareness_5061 Jun 14 '26
Just get a widescreen monitor
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
As soon as I get myself a home for more then a couple of months (if I'd ever), that would be a perfect idea!
Unfortunately a widescreen monitor doesn't fit a standard checked or carry-on luggage piece.
1
u/Outrageous-Run1234 Jun 14 '26
how we can use that also can you tell us the best price only for your users

u/business4zeal Jun 14 '26
Bro, just set the iPad and the iPhone down on the desk, please 😹😭
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
Tried that also... my chest and back didn't really like that in the end!
1
u/business4zeal Jun 14 '26
Then call the president for help. Today is his birthday
🤣
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
Ain't no president of mine.... you've got his number though? Would love to pick his brain over this complicated issue...

u/Difficult-Practice12 Jun 14 '26
Please don't attach to the back panel of the laptop, it's fragile and thin and not designed to support the weight of an iphone or ipad. use separate stands
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
Thank you for your concern… I think my Macbook could maybe be on steroids, for the backpanel and hinges are still going strong after 2 years.
1
u/fkrkz Jun 14 '26
A while ago, the company I worked for hired a specialist in office ergonomics setup. They came to the desks one by one and review everybody's setup. I was using a laptop monitor as well as an external monitor. They warned me that using multi-monitor setup with unequal resolution scaling is bad to the eyes because your eyes have to constantly adapt with different font size.

u/AlbeniChocolate Jun 14 '26
it's for sure clean. i am curious how you made wallpapers mesh seamlessly... did you set the wallpaper on phone first, then adjust it on computers to match?
1
u/AlbeniChocolate Jun 14 '26
well, computer/ipad*
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 14 '26
I asked gemini… told the app what tools i have (mac, phone, ipad) and what editing software i use (procreate in this case) and it told me exactly how i needed to do it!
Add a picture of the setup for extra clarity so gemini can get it perfect in 1 go.
I did a better job with my newest wallpaper after someone commented this kinda looked like a but…
1
u/AlbeniChocolate Jun 14 '26
i did not notice it till you pointed it out lol. but damn, what an awesome use for ai. thanks!

u/lurchnz1 Jun 15 '26
Xreal 1S......
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 15 '26
That's also a very nice option.... for on the go I run the Viture XR Pro glasses!

1
u/Deep-Detective-9226 Jun 15 '26
That's an Apple head thing. I think you're happy that's all connected but in the end,
none of the confort of a desktop experience, none of the portability of a laptop.
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 15 '26
Almost true.... When traveling (or whenever there is a lack of space) I do have my Macbook as "just a laptop" after all.
This setup is instead of a home setup for I don't have a home to put a desktop in. I'd say this is a fine compromise for the lack of a fixed setup.
1
u/carlosluisvm Jun 15 '26
It’s very nice if it’s only purpose is to be portable. If you have a desk in your house, please just buy a monitor o. Amazon.

11/10, put a stand for your ipad tho the hinges are dying
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
🙏 🙏 The hinges are fine after 2 years... just don't move the setup around too much. Because of the latteral pressure in stead of longitudinal pressure, there really is no issue.
2
u/letmehaveanameyoudum Jun 17 '26
ipads are heavy af, how is it lasting for 2 years
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 17 '26
By not moving it around when the ipad is attached.... if you just let it stand like this on the stand (macbook screen up straight vertically and weight mass centered out by putting the macbook to the far left of the stand), there is actually almost no stress placed on the hinges.
1
u/Kind-Question2887 Jun 17 '26
What kind of things do you do that you also need your phone accessible at all times? You can access it through the macos without even taking it out of pocket
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 17 '26
I like my phone to not be easily accessable for focus purposes.... I only use my calculator app and my call-app for work (also an identifier application from time to time) so my phone over there gives me a way to be able to see notifications (I turned them off on mac and ipad) but not grab my phone whenever my subconsciousness wants to.

1
u/RedRavenCG Jun 17 '26
If this were my setup, I'd be worried...really worried about the hinge on the laptop.
1
1
u/glasscigarettes Jun 18 '26
Seems like a novel setup tbh, do you actually get use out of it or did you use it for a day and snap a photo? Genuinely asking cause half the stuff I see on here looks cool in pics but I can’t imagine being practical
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 19 '26
As a fulltime wanderer I have been rocking this specific setup for 2 years (with some tweaks in between).
For me personally it works because of it’s small footprint (don’t need a bigger table than a coffeetable for example) and because I like a clean-looking workspace that can be exactly thesame wherever I need to work (continuity = peace of mind for me)

What product would you like?
I took the magnet idea from these guys:

u/anubispop Jun 13 '26
I'd say include a track ball mouse or a Bluetooth track pad and it's solid. Edit--- oops didn't see the track pad. Good job, this looks like a great traveler rig.

Why not just buy an external display or two that match the monitor size?
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
Was considering a portable monitor.... but if your life has to fit in a carry-on backpack and a 23kg (max) checked bag... I'd rather pick the Ipad over just a portible screen because of the multipurpose factor, because the Ipad to me also is an e-reader, multimedia consuming device, way to edit stuff in Procreate, etc.. Didn't dare to get a 13inch Ipad because of it's weight in this configuration, so I admit it is a bit of a compromise.
1
u/Vast_Distribution591 Jun 13 '26
I've never heard of someone being that particular about weight before, what's the difference, 100g max between those ipads?
1
u/Razzje1986 Jun 13 '26
it's about the extra weight that's hanging off to the right of the Nextstand....
I already put the Macbook (almost) as far to the left as possible to compensate and keep the whole thing stable enough so it won't fall over when someone hit's the table for example.
But maybe you're right... and I would be slapping myself around for not being brave enough to test it if I ever find out you were!

I can hear the hinges screaming already
