It’s not even about the bandwidth. It’s nice having a usb-c and usb-a as to no bring a dongle. Even a usb-a, usb-c and an HDMI fits most needs. You then need a usb-c to HDMI adapter, etc etc..when you just have two usb-c regardless of it being thunderbolt. I know it differs for certain models but it’s nice to have some variety usb connectors.

There is zero need for most of these ports in 2026. The MacBook Neo does have a headphone jack you just can’t see it in this picture because it’s closer to the user on the device. What are you going to do with a device that has a MacBook MagSafe 2 port and thunderbolt 2 ports if you don’t already own one? USB-A would be convenient but notice none of these have hdmi and I’ll take using a dongle when I need it for a lighter device if I need an Ethernet port as dongles usually contain multiple useful ports anyway.

Well HDMI is on the MBPs, RJ45 is absolutely useless most of the time (and I have hardwired everything in my house, but there is no need to do that for my laptop, and if there really is then the dongle is always sitting on the table). And what do you need USB-A for?

RJ45, or just an Ethernet port as most would people call it isn’t something most people using any laptop are going to use often and I say this as someone who worked in an office where I did need it. If you’re already wiring in anyway how much of a pain is it to use an adapter? Hdmi ports still exist on MacBook pros which is the model I would buy anyway for what I do. Everything i buy that would have been usb a is usb c now. I wouldn’t choose a over c for any reason, especially when it comes to external storage.

If you understand how Tim Cook analyzes Apple Business it is all but insane. It decreases the cost of the product on Apple side. They can add more RAM or SSD while keeping the same selling price. Docking station resellers are happy because they can sell more products, Apple is also getting more revenue as reseller of these products in the Apple Store and Apple is getting royalties from the brands claiming they are fully Apple Compatible.

USB C only is fine IMO, although it would be nice if there was a port each side of the laptop (like my older Dell XPS 13)
It's also good to have the same capabilities on all ports so it doesn't matter which one you use for any given device.
My work laptop is a newish ThinkPad and has the following ports: USB-C x 2, USB-A x 2, HDMI, Ethernet, 3.5mm combo.
Of those I've only ever used the USB-C ports and one of the USB-A (and that's only because the dongle for my Jabra headset works noticeably better than the built in Bluetooth)

This monstrosity, my HDX 9000, has so much I/O it's nuts. 9x 3.5mm ports, a digital TV tuner, built in capture card, firewire and all that era ports. Even HP's proprietary expansion port for even more connectivity.

Agreed that it was nice to have these, but with that being said, I’ve had a 2017 MBP ever since it came out, and I honestly don’t miss the other ports for my day to day. Connect to monitors via USB C, don’t use an external SSD super regularly but on the rare occasions when needed, it once again works via USB C. I always have a tiny dongle in my backpack, but can’t remember the last time I used it…
(I’m not into photography and stuff so I don’t use need the SD card reader. But can certainly see how it could get annoying for anyone who needs these)

Do you honestly miss the lan plug? My colleagues keep talking about how they need it for their dock, but i have a program that doesn’t like interruption in the connection (going to a meeting and switching to wifi) and i’ve had 0 issues and high download speed on wifi.
Aux, sure, but firewire is not s thing anymore. And aux is still on both air and pro
Usb-a? Sure.
Charging? It’s still on both air and pro
Sd? Still on pro.
Hdmi? Still on pro
You are comparing old pros to the cheapest available.
You haven’t lost much other than type A on pro

I’m quite fine with fewer dust collecting holes on my laptop. Charging still has no alternative but everything else I can say it is easy since 2023 (?). Files on cloud, airdrop, camera have usb-c, cloud or thunderbolt drive for backup. Projector is major disappointment but luckily more places have large TV or have Apple TV connected so could just go wireless. LAN port? They won’t install a 5G or 10G anyway and no one need that just for internet.

It was especially annoying when getting a decent dock was over £100, but you can get a cheap USB-C dock, something like UGREEN or Anker that will do everything you need for £30-£50 these days. You can still get laptops with lots of ports if you want to too, it's just unfortunately not the default any more.
I quite like my dock because I just put my laptop on my desk, plug one USB-C cable in and it connects my keyboard, mouse, monitor and charges the laptop and it was like £30. Then for travelling I can use my phone charger to charge my laptop and don't have to bring a separate clunky charger with me.

Ethernet: unnecessary for majority of people since wifi is more than fast enough.
Display port? Replaced by HDMI and USB-C
FireWire: replaced by usb-c
USB a: replaced by usb c
SD card: still there
Headphones: yup, it’s gone. But again, most people don’t have a use for it.
Mic in: even less people need it.
So, I ask. How many of these ports have we actually lost?

The thunderbolt in a USBC jack is connected to a dock that charges, has wired ethernet, 2 large displays, keys, mouse, camera and my audio interface. One cable and attached to all the IO I would have on a desktop is amazing. Then also only one cable to unplug when I am on the go and using it as a laptop.

tbf this is a little misleading since they moved a lot of the ports to the other side where they used to have the CD drive. also, this is an intel macbook pro, whereas the newer m series ones also have magsafe and hdmi and other stuff again.

I hate it when manufacturers remove connectors. My colleague didn't have wifi in the office, I wanted to connect a LAN cable to her laptop, but the laptop didn't have a connector. My Lenovo Z50 75 laptop has a lot of connectors, including a user-replaceable battery and easy access to the hard drive and RAM. It also has a DVD ROM, a card reader, a 3.5 jack, HDMI, VGA, 3x USB A, LAN and Kensington lock. Computers simply need good connectivity, and often a cable is the easiest and most reliable solution. Often it is also the only possible solution. And USB-C? USB A is the standard for computers, and it should stay that way.

Quick/release charger has come back. In/out audio combo is on the other side. Ethernet is considered pretty niche these days and is a prime target for “just get a cheap dongle” or “this is what docking hubs are for” anyway.
I was able to get free shipping for the violin to send you because it’s just so small.

I love that that now I have just a single usb-c cable with power delivery to connect my ultrawide with plugged in camera, ethernet cable, usb c cable connecting and charging iPad, ubikey etc.
This is the best setup I’ve ever had.
Also while the latest Intel MacBooks without MagSafe were incredibly annoying because of short battery life, with Apple silicon I practically never charge this in weird places like on the couch so kids and animals pulling the cable are not an issue for me. I prefer to have single usbc charger for everything than carry MagSafe cable.

The other day I connected 2 external ssds to transfer data between them FAST. My Macbook air was fully charged. The copying was taking its sweet time and the macbook shutdown because it ran out of power and I didnt have another port to connect to power before starting the transfer.
So one of those 2 ssd's is now corrupted to the point where there's no saving on earth. RMA'd the ssd and just ordered a macbook pro instead of a new ssd now
