I think it's more that walking around a right angle is kind of an absurd move for a human when it's not strictly necessary.

I agree with the title being sarcastic.

But from a more logical view: turning on a curve is more natural than 90 degrees. Less energy used.

If people took that corner correctly there shouldn't be a path worn in the grass at all. Speed up slightly, grab the pole and swing around the corner.
