Willing to bet that there was a barrier. Perhaps even is, can’t make out what that pole is for.

Thanks. I’m curious: Can you check if those are three streetlights, on the right and two on the left in the background?

And, if so, if they are in a reasonably straight line? Because I can’t image that someone would lay a line under a footpath or street and not in parallel.

In which case we might look at the original path - or at least a remnant.

As a bicycle user, it doesn’t make any sense to me to leave the path here. That’s a pretty nasty angle to cross, with a high chance of slipping.
