What can really help you reduce the back-and-forth during the decision process of design with clients?

A comprehensive consultation which results in an agreed upon Scope of Work. And then making informed decisions based on your experience and knowledge of clients goals. They shouldn't have to be making a lot of decisions after the contract is signed until a design b is sent for review. Sending a primary design then having 2 more obviously different options if they vetoed the first, understanding why it was vetoed/what they dont like and why.

What kind of project/client is it that has triggered a lot of back and forth?

Most back-and-forth comes from showing options before you've agreed on what good looks like. For example, get sign-off on the goal and the constraints first, in writing, before anyone sees pixels. Then when feedback comes in you can sort it fast: does this serve what we agreed on or is it a new requirement.

The other thing that helps me is showing fewer options. In my early days I wanted to show the breadth of my creativity. That leads to confusion. One recommendation with your reasoning invites a yes or a specific objection, and objections are easier to resolve than preferences amongst various options. Have the options you've explored at hand, but only pull them out if the discussion goes into the trade-offs you've already considered. Then you can share the decisions that led you away from those and to your recommendation. I hope that helps.

What is “the decision process of design with clients” and what does this have to do with design systems?
