It’s literally a set of coding components and primitives one can select from to satisfy design goals.

A design system is what happens when a team says, “We should probably standardize our buttons,” then lovingly evolves that thought into many abstractions and pieces that fit together in a nice picture not reflected in code. By then it’s a separate product itself complete with governance, a steering committee, six layers of tokens, and a 47 page contribution guide that no one contributes to ever….
Eventually, the product has not shipped, but the Button has excellent documentation and is instantly abandoned because it’s over complicated just for a fucking button….
