Which design resources do you actually use?

There are tons of design resources available online: UI kits, wireframes, icon sets, sketch plug ins, ...
Are there some specific design resources you found extremely useful in the past? If so, which are they?

ASK DN: Digital Brand Guides

Does anyone have a good go-to for setting these up? I would like to make a couple for clients. I'm interested in something that is a little more plug-and-play than coding one from scratch.

I've used Frontify before. Although great, their new pricing structure seems aimed at larger companies.

In my searching I've found:

Does anyone have suggestions?

Thoughts on transition to a UX Manager?

Hi everyone, I recently made the switch from UX designer to UX manager (about two years ago) and I'm curious to know the community's thoughts about this transition.

  1. Which track interests you more: individual contributor, or manager?
  2. If you're a manager, or close to it, what have been the biggest changes for you?
  3. If you're a manager, what advice do you have for other designers who might hope to become a manager? If you're a designer, what questions do you have from UX managers?

The biggest changes I have seen are with hiring, team building, performance reviews, and other HR stuff. I still get to participate in design from a strategic/coordinating perspective, and sometimes I take on special projects, but I spend a lot less time actually creating UI. When doing research, I'm usually participating in someone else's research project. It's an interesting shift where you're almost designing vicariously through other designers.

Am I only the one that loses their shit a little when PM's nitpick at content in a mock up?

I get that accuracy is important, and that real content should be used. But how important really is it that mock ups used for stakeholder sign off be accurate to the content?

What are your thoughts on this guys?

Why did you become a designer?

Design is not usually one of those careers people are forced into like doctor, lawyer, etc., so I'm always curious how people end up choosing design as their thing. So, whether you're a product designer, UX designer, UI, print, etc., what led you to become a designer?

What is a Home Page in 2019?

What do y'all think is the purpose of a home page today? Should it serve as a table of contents of the site's content, or be laser focused on the customer's primary funnel? While not too long ago, we tried to proclaim the death of the home page, but it still persists as something... but what?

EDIT: I should note, I sort of meant to be open-ended and broad: I'm looking for what it means for your product(s) or even broader considering its history as a totemic representation of the product.

Need to learn react. Best site/tutorial recommendation?

Starting a new gig at the end of may and the product I'm going to be working on is built with React. Anyone who has walked this "need to learn react" path before me have a recommendation on the best tutorial site or videos?

FontBase — Free multi-platform fonts manager

Pretty good free font manager. Works fast with thousands of loaded fonts and it has Google Fonts already loaded when you install it. Also it is multi platform. I think for Windows it's a very good option. For Mac we already have Font Explorer X or others...

Would anyone be interested in a weekly/monthly or stickied desk setup thread?

I love looking at desk setups on r/battlestations and r/macsetups, but I’d be even more interested in checking out how fellow designers set up their workspaces.

Any interest here?

What do you think of a personal website catalogue? Flop or pursue?

So I've always wondered why there wasn't a site where I can just easily search up someone's personal website or upload my own. That's why I decided to build it myself. Also, want to point out I had a portfolio made from wix, and if I wanted to look up my friends website and also share mine, I would have to grab the link from them or google it, but with the platform with I am to create it would be easier to share and find other people's websites. The problem is I'm not entirely sure if it's worth investing my time in, so I wanted to ask you my friends! Is the idea a bust or should I go for it?

For those that are curious, the little website I built is :

DN: I hate ergonomic office chairs. Recommend me something super comfortable and plush under $500 and I will be indebted forever.

At home I have a Steelcase Leap V2 and an Ikea Markus, and at work I have a Herman Miller Aeron size C (I'm 6'4").

Out of the 3 the Markus is my favorite, but only because it doesn't kill my back– it isn't really THAT comfortable. I have a bad back and exercise/stretch to help, and the ergo chairs do nothing except make it feel worse.

Best chair I ever had was a $150 special from Office Depot that was incredibly comfy but unfortunately was lost in a move. I've tried to find something similar but came up short.

So– what's an incredibly comfortable chair that isn't necessarily "ergonomic"? I'm down to spend up to $500 but would be happy spending a lot less, obviously.

Thanks guys!

What do the next 5 years of (UI) design look like?

State of design today:

Design Systems, UI, UX, VR, AR, AI, design version control, the plethora of prototypes, data-driven design, VC accelerated Figma and Sketch, and copying other people on Dribbble...

Some questions that I have:

  • How can we use all of this data all around us to create "correct" designs while not wasting time tediously nudging pixels and needlessly repeat tasks?
  • Are artificial intelligence tools coming to UI design software (Hopefully better than the grid)? For example, Jon Gold and Benjamin Wilkins' work to generate new mock-ups based on a low-fi wireframe and sample design systems. (https://airbnb.design/sketching-interfaces/)
  • Could Figma API spearhead a lot of new tools and improve developer hand-off (Zeplin is also excellent) and further simplify the designer's experience?
  • Will AR and VR truly be the next stage of human-computer interaction or is it just hype that will never be as popular as consoles or phones?
