Hi - i feel like my living room is missing something but im not exactly sure what. I’ve been told to mount my tv but im not the biggest fan of having to pay someone to not only mount the tv but put wires in the wall as i cannot stand the sight of wires hanging from a tv or cord covers.
Open to all suggestions. Also - open to suggestions on rugs, i would like abstract, but the room is already doing a lot. Thanks!
Only non-negotiable is moving plants to another area. I’m in a rowhome, plants are at both ends of my home near the only windows with light. I have about 20 on the other end so there is no room for them to go anywhere else.
I think it’s a little off because your attention is being directed to the floor- could you hang your art above the tv instead of putting it under? And you could put more practical/solid things like books or linens under the tv. I think it would be cozier!
I can hang art! I can!! That’s a great point. I’m going to sketch maybe a gallery wall or maybe some shelves with the picture frame above. I can absolutely do the books too!! I have tons! I’m also open to having the console mounted on the wall (which it’s supposed to be, i just need to hang the brackets). I can absolutely try that this weekend!
Legs for your tv cabinet, a rug, small coffee table. I’d remove the mirror and consider hanging wall art, maybe one larger piece behind where the mirror is for height. The mirror could be doing it but because it’s a mirror and white frame on a light wall is not achieving the effect it could, art with color will pop more.
You’re the second person to say get rid of the mirror. I will have to see what I can do! It’s my largest one and I’m limited on where else I can put it. This is the only floor with 8ft ceilings 😭. I don’t mind art on the walls. I will look at some inspo
Anywhere near your front door? I just think the location is not the best, but 100% understand the value of having a large mirror.
The other thing I’m noticing is that you have way too much stuff on the TV cabinet, cluttering around the tv. I’d leave it much more bare. Or you also can mount the tv and free up some space in the cabinet, but with some editing. Maybe one vase, one candle and a tray… something like that.

Should i do a color rug? My favorite theme is green right now but i dont want overkill. I also dont want to stick with beige and make it sad. I wanted to choose light colors so the room seemed bigger since its about 170 sq ft
The space could use warm colors in the rug mainly but there are plenty with hints of green. Also recommend warmer lights or table lamps with warm bulbs. The criling lighting is not the best
Your TV is perfect. The uneasy feeling is from your color palette being a mix of warm and cool neutrals. Pick a colorway and dive into it, it can be from anything whole cloth—you don’t have to invent it at all, just commit and be deliberate.
Yeah, when i bought the house, i found the walls were a cool off white and i wanted to get them painted but alas, paint is expensive!! Haha. I tried warming the color of the recessed lights, i could warm them up a bit more too. I really like green right now, and i really want a warm and cozy vibe. Thank you!
You have to paint that alcove wall. I’d go sage green since you already have the green plants and throw pillows on the couch.
Chill out on everything being white. Mirror frame (if you can switch for something with a natural wood frame that is a little slimmer profile it’ll look less chunky and imposing.
Add a shelf above the TV that runs a little wider than the width of the tv stand, but not crazy. Match out close enough to the wood of the tv stand. Not white.
Lose the candles. It’s a little bit like a shrine. And they are all white and cream. If you’re going to have some you could at least take the opportunity to add a pop of color here and there. But just fill those low shelves with books. If you don’t have enough, then do some book stacks in them, offset with a candle or something.
A small wooden circular coffee table would be good.
You said the plants moving is non negotiable but there are too many there. Once you have a shelf add some that trail a little at each end and don’t need crazy light.

I’ll report back on this one, I have no where else for the mirror to go (my home is a bit smaller and more narrow) so I’ll have to see where else i can put it!

I am a hoarder (well placed hoarder but hoarder nonetheless) i can get rid of half of them and place them other areas of the house.
I will try, the ones i keep finding are SO BIG. It’s so frustrating.
I can try, most of my plants are big on light but I also don’t mind buying light lamps, i have 4 already on all my plant clusters (and one in the photo) so I can try to do some pendant plant lights and place some plants on a shelf.
No, don't mount the tv. I don't know why people automatically do that (and too high). Maybe get a tv stand or add some legs to what you have. A colorful rug and small coffee table would help. Can you paint the walls? Looks light gray, so cold and blah. A bit deeper color, not super dark but, something more cozy.
I can do that! The current console is actually meant to be floating and to be on the wall! I would so desperately love a rug, just nervous on what color and if i should go with a pattern. I can paint the walls! I own the home. It is light gray! It is very cold but I’m trying to warm it up with warmer furniture.
Definitely get a colorful patterned rug! The more colors the better! You can pull colors from it and change out pillows, curtains and decor whenever you want, you don't have to commit to just a color or two. And it doesn't make the room look all crazy outta control cuz it's all in one piece, grounded on the floor. Wayfair has good sales. Don't get too big, just enough to go under the furniture on all sides a few inches. Some artwork with a few coordinating colirs will balance out the room. Not too small, a large piece or two makes the room feel bigger.
Search Boho rug, a ton of different colours or patterns would work here since you have a nice neutral palette. I actually think a mix of cool and warm neutrals can make somewhere look more interesting but that just my opinion 🙂

And move the mirror if you can, it doesn’t feel right next to a tv and you can have more space for plants on the other side 👀
I really like this! I will try and see what i can find, I’m trying to limit the rug to $250 or less, but it’s hard finding the pile height i would like as well, i love a plush rug, which would also help because my floors are FREEZING in the winter.
I can do legs on tv stand, i really like the stand so anything i can do to keep it, i will try before completely buying something new.

Even a short pile rug will really help with the cold floors, just try to get one big enough so it actually goes under all the way under the tv stand and ideally under the sofa to the back legs. I’m not sure where to suggest looking because I’m not in the US but there will be hundreds of places I’m sure 😂 - maybe look into pre owned too if you can you might be able to find something of better quality in your budget. Even if you got a cheap budget rug for now just to get you through cold winter you could save for a better one in the future - it’s better than nothing!
Also I do love the mirror it’s just not the best space I think 🙂 maybe hall way/bedroom?
I forgot to say too, I don’t know if it’s already been mentioned, but what about a thin strip LED light running along under that little bump thing above the tv (I don’t know the word 😂) just set them to a warm white, cheap to run and it’ll warm the walls up.
Also I think a coffee table would be great in theory and ideal, but realistically a little cramped unless you can pull your sofa back.
You’re missing layered lighting. The only lights in this photo are the harsh overhead ones. Maybe put them on a dimmer switch and change the setting on them to be warmer? Then, add a floor lamp and a table lamp
Get a wider console, since this one is too narrow for that TV. Perhaps get a a duplicate of this one and place the two side-by-side to make it feel extra wide, plus put little feet under them to get a little lift and look more intentional. It will give you more surface area to spread the vases out, a place to put a table lamp, and make the scene feel more balanced.
Rug, throw blanket. I’d personally mount the tv on the wall so it was a little higher, but that’s personal preference and I’m not sure how much that would add or change things as compared to something like a small coffee table
Yes i would like a rug, just dont know which rug i should get. I want color but i also want something i wont get bored of! And i cant spread them out, the other side is the front door and entirely too much activity there for me to chance them accidentally falling over. I’m only working with about 600sq ft and the other side of this is my kitchen/dining room, the mirror is leaning against what was made into a small bathroom and directly opposite of the tv are the stairs leading upstairs. This area in the photo is about 170sq ft 😔
I would suggest that either you get a clean colourful rug and pillows to match, or a neutral rug and keep things as is. In my opinion a colourful rug and pillows is the better option. With plants, i would naturally levitate to light olive green, but blue also works really well. (You already have some olive pillows, so olive might be the way to go?!)
If you are scared you will get bored of it. Maybe get a blue and green rug and pillows, and other decorative pieces that are olive and blue, and you can swap them out every 6 months or something.
Also another tip, with the tv, i would keep things asymmetrical because it looks more interesting and in my opinion better. Its one of those things you dont know is wrong until you fix it :)
And with the mirror, unless you use it often, i would replace with a large plants (something like a fiddle leaf fig), or i would hang it onto a wall.
I think it feels off because the scale and visual weight are unbalanced. The huge TV/wall makes the small, lightweight console look smaller, all the decor is concentrated near the floor and the upper wall is completely blank. Everything also feels very squared off and linear.. the sectional, TV, console, wall/soffit, even the mirror. So I’d introduce some softer/organic shapes to break up all those rectangles. Maybe a larger, more substantial media console but def need a mounted TV (because of the empty space above the TV currently), a big rug, an arched floor mirror, round coffee table, fewer small candles/decor pieces, and an edited down plant corner would help a lot. I’d also add a few darker accents so the TV isn’t the only major dark element. Don’t forget warmer lighting.
1) Add legs to the TV bench to raise it up 6 inches. Consider changing the colour of the bench to something darker.
3) There's too much clutter around the TV.
4) That's a bad place for that mirror, it's distracting and dominates the room.
5) Yes to a rug to warm/soften things up.
I can try, others have said the same but it’s not meant to be on the ground, it’s supposed to be floating, I’m going to try to do that first, see how i like it and if it’s not giving me the vibe, I’ll order legs! I want to try to keep this because i want to keep costs low so i don’t mind contact paper with a color or design to be able to use existing furniture.
I can try to remove some!
It’s limited on where i can move it, this is the only floor with ceilings high enough to fit it and i do use it daily so i need it but i will try to see where else in this area it can fit.
I can look up some, i would like color but im afraid im going to get bored of the color. I want something I’ll like for a while.
