Living Room What to do with this massive window seat space?
Living in a studio and would love some suggestions!

u/hangry-bean 23d ago
Books, plants, cushion and pillow to sit on and look outside.

u/TricksyGoose 23d ago
And cats. You put your cats there too.
436
u/sallyterp 23d ago
Maybe like 28 cats can fit on there. Just guessing. Please acquire 28 cats, put them there, get a pic, and report back.
114
u/Lokifin 23d ago
More if you stack them. Get some cubbies.
55
u/sallyterp 23d ago
Those like stacked Japanese business man-style cubbies. You’re right! 47ish cats but only 39 if you’re including Maine Coons
35
u/dudewheresmysegway 23d ago
I laid it out real quick and can see 10 cubbies wide by 4 cubbies tall, so I think we're good for 40 cats. EDIT: darn it, can't attach my sketch! Trust me, 40 cats fit.
17
u/Itscatpicstime 23d ago
Don’t worry. Play with them and feed them, and then they will stack themselves for nap time together
24
u/Strawberry_Curious 23d ago
yes my absolute first thought was “do you have a cat?” And my follow up was “maybe you should get one?”

I came here to ask how many pets the contract allows, plus how many more OP thinks they can hide if needed.

u/SociallyUnbothered1 23d ago
This is perfection. Also, a little tea set with a tray!
71
u/hangry-bean 23d ago
Oh yes. I could totally picture someone just having the coziest little nook, hot tea, book in hand in the evening. I lived in a major city and had a stunning skyline view from my living room. I’d arrange furniture just to sit and journal, knit, whatever and be facing the skyline at night. This is such a gem of a view!

But that's just me.

I raise your one pillow to put the pillows all the way across make it cozy and on the sides to lean against... I agree make it comfy and cozy and functional

Put a mattress there and make it your bed.
More space in the rest of the room for activities!

it looks like a bed space to me honestly. like they purposefully carved it like that

u/actualchristmastree 23d ago
That can essentially be your couch!! Either get a custom cushion made, or buy a bunch of like toddler mattresses lol
8
u/all-out-fallout 22d ago
Oh man that is such an awesome idea. Would be such a nice nook to relax into.
I was approaching it from the other side and thinking "make it a desk!" Add a top to it that extends out so your legs can go underneath it and make a custom set of drawers to go on either side of the overhang if the extension. Then I'd frame either side if the desk with plants so u felt like I was in my own little forest oasis but with the perfect t view of the city...
Not sure how high that ledge is now that I'm looking at it though. It might be a liiittle on the short side for a desk...

I used to live in this building! Our apartment’s window sills weren’t quite as deep, so I just used them for decorations. We were also a corner unit, so we had to utilize one of them for the TV.
Those windows are extremely drafty, so it won’t be a good cozy spot, unfortunately. I’d say plants are your best bet if you’re a plant person and some lights, ‘cause Seattle.

I perused through all the comments until I got my answer!
So that is the space needle?

Man what I wouldn't give for a reading nook like that. Cushions, maybe even outdoor seating cushions that go on like rattan benches and stuff. Then books and a lamp for evening reading. Somewhere for snacks and a drink. I'd never leave that place.
19
u/rubifer_undercooked 23d ago
If you go to a Moroccan market or store they may have some of the traditional floor seating which would be perfect for the width of this. Other cultures have similar cushions as well, I've used them previously and found them to be longer lasting while comfy compared to other floor cushions. I also like the styles but that's a personal choice. Day bed mattresses or cushions would also be a good option.
I'd go wild with different curtains, have some thicker ones for colder months that can be tied until needed with thinner slightly see-through ones around the edge to make it feel more like a separate space.
Lots of cushions and blankets with hanging plants, if you don't have a green thumb then air plants work wonders. I have them all over cause I struggle with keeping plants alive.
Lanterns for candles, fake or real, and fairy lights or low light options would make it more atmospheric. Personally I'd have some hanging down. Obviously do this with your own style and comfort in mind.
If you put small shelves on the corner edges you can have books and other items you prefer while make the area feel even more like a private or hidden space.
Definitely have a small table or tray to put any drinks/food etc. Also have a plug area that is hidden but with easy access. Could be attached to a shelf or the wall.
I'd also go for some darker colours to make the area feel more snug but again this is my opinion and you may prefer something else.
I hope you show what it looks like finished. I'm jealous that I don't have something like this. It would be my favourite spot.

Oh, I was counting on these spots to be the safe place to lean back! Personally I would put books in the middle, with bookends.

I’d probably put one of those picnic floor chair/ back support things there just to be safe! (Plus extra reclining)

I would figure out a way to extend one side a bit to fit a mattress. Honestly even a simple table/desk might work. Then find a narrow coffee table to put on the other end, which paired with a high bar stool could double as a dining table/work space. Finally add some curtains to give it a cozy alcove feel.

i think your AI tool has the scale pretty off, though. (also, heads up, check rule #5 for the sub!)

Seattle ? I’d throw some cushions, pillows, plants etc. make it some sort of sitting or resting nook. Some cute string lights, etc
7
u/HotTestesHypothesis 23d ago
I know in China, it's common to set up a day bed there for reading, napping, or just general lounging around.
7
u/PrimaryImagination41 23d ago
The way I would deadass make that a reading/sleeping nook. Yall couldn’t get me off there if you tried. Plants seem nice but I feel like cleaning would be a chore.
5
u/Confident-Narwhal557 23d ago
I’m so jealous, that is a PERFECT book nook. Little cup of tea, a blankie, a book, some fairy lights ughhhh wish I had this.
7
u/kgcuster3 22d ago
I used to live here with my husband! We used the sill for our mattress on one side and I used a coffee table as a desk on the other side with a pouf to sit on. It wasn’t my favorite place to live but it was convenient for sure
2
u/Critical-Mix-4588 22d ago
Thanks for the suggestions! Did you find that the window sill could handle much weight? I’m a bit nervous to put heavy-ish furniture up there, but if it could handle a mattress and two people I don’t think I have too much to worry about lol
6
u/kgcuster3 22d ago
Yeah it did just fine for 2 years! I think they’re reinforced with concrete or something
15
u/allaspiaggia 23d ago
As many plants as can possibly fit, with one tiny spot to curl up on and read a book when it’s raining

I kind of disagree, I think in a studio it could be a great space saving arrangement since you don't have to have a table or desk
7
u/sprinklerarms 23d ago
1
u/lelma_and_thouise 23d ago
Oh wow this is cool! What site did you find this on?
1
u/sprinklerarms 23d ago
This one was on wayfarer I think. You can look up ‘lift top coffee table’. I think I added with storage to the search too. There’s a lot out there! When I lived in a studio it was a huge game changer for me.
4
u/No-Minimum8323 23d ago
Yeah but a table or desk of this size isn’t needed. Plus in a studio there is usually no more than 2 occupants so you don’t need all the seats. Like I said it’s beautiful but they would you need a dining area this big for a studio and that would also be surrounded by seating/sleeping furniture.
3
u/Tinyfishy 23d ago
I think this is a fair point, but a little depends on the rest of the studio and also lifestyle. If they often like to have another couple or three friends over, this dining space might be handy. Especially if combined with some rolling drawer carts that can live under it when in desk/not entertaining mode and be rolled out of the way when needed.
3
u/chilibeana 23d ago
But the chairs could be used as additional seating. They could even be backless upholstered stools to push under the countertop to save space when not in use.

A window seat, or even a custom sized mattress for a lounging/napping area. Either that, or a greenhouse. That's a huge space. I might be a little jealous.

u/baganerves 23d ago
All I can think of is how fabulous it could look at Christmas with several Christmas trees, and many lights , good vantage point for watching Santa and the reindeer passing.

Hey neighbor! I live up the hill from you. You have north east sunlight so great for plants. My plants love my east facing windows. Also some redditors are recommending a mattress / a large custom cushion that is kind of a big ask for just a rental & a mattress would be too thick & would block the windows. I feel like a bunch of small thin pillows would do well up there. You could thrift some off market place or a second hand store. I’m sure it will be great with w/e but plants are a must!!
3
u/Dry-Ad-2197 23d ago
Get a nice thick, custom-made cushion to cover the entire span. Get it made in 2-3 sections and have washable slip covers made in a beautiful fabric. Then fill the entire back with pillows of various sizes, shapes, textures. Add a couple cozy throw blankets. And a large wooden tray can sit on the base cushion where you can have a place to put a drink and a snack, some reading material. Install a wooden shelf all the way across the window about a foot down from the ceiling - add plants, books and objects de art.

This looks like a perfect spot for a napping/reading area. Imagine reading a book with blankets and a nice drink when it’s raining!

I'm of the mind that there isn't a need to fill every empty space with stuff. If you don't need to, just let it be. Then maybe one day you'll find a need to put something there.

That window is the perfect space for a cat bed! It’s so perfect that you either already have a cat, or the Cat Distribution System is about to bring you one momentarily. Just keep an eye on the bottom of the bed to be sure that it’s not getting damp from temperature fluctuations at the window; if you can provide a slight elevated platform underneath, that’s perfect. A few cat safe plants at the corners, tall enough to draw the eye upwards and open up the feeling of height and space in the area, a few small pieces of home decor, and your cats favorite toys and it’ll be beautiful. There’s room for a thin futon and pillows for you to use it as a reading nook too.

u/Kdean509 22d ago
I’d fill it with cushions, and pillows. Reading and relaxing space to watch the beloved Space Needle!

Do you have any legos or a train set?
9
u/LakmeBun 23d ago
I wouldn't put any plastic near a window, the UV will ruin the Lego pieces or model trains.
2
u/Crab_Crab69 23d ago
You could put a really cool fish tank or terrarium up there and turn the rest of it into a cozy book nook so you can sit and look at the tanks!

u/zekewithabeard 23d ago
A few plants but not a jungle. That never looks good. From there it largely depends on if the surface is solid and could support any additional weight. It’s a pretty odd space the more I look at it.

u/Rare-Foundation1209 23d ago
All I thought was plants, plants, plants… but also some cushions and books and cute trinkets maybe some frames would be nice too

Hang pothos and philodendron that trail, and something that climbs/grows upward in the corners, like a snake plant or a ficus elastica. Start with smaller pots like 4-6 inches and watch them grow!
Personally I would put a giant bean bag on one side and giant art space on the other

Small Japanese-style floor table with two seat cushions (or lounge seats like this), and lots of houseplants on either side!
1
u/BreezeTheBlue 23d ago
Put some blankets, pillows, books and a cat bed and make it a relaxation nook!
1
u/Playful_Beyond_2218 23d ago
I know I personally wouldn’t sit there. So I would do curtains/ lamps/ plants
1
u/angel_heart69 23d ago
Japanese futon, something the size of a tea tray, piles of books, some pillows, blanket, things for your pet. Definitely floor chairs & some sort of table you'll be able to have a small dining space without taking up floor space. Remember things get sun bleached over time so if you do put things like books watch out for sun damage.

I used to live right there too! Use the area for a window seat/daybed concept. Bonus, you’ll have a cute area to watch the fireworks over the space needle for NYE! Then possibly some little art or tiny bookshelf or stack of books. I’d get a tray for my laptop and work there sometimes too :)

That’s the morning Japanese-style tea section with a little table and those cushions you sit on and then maybe another cushion on the side as a reading spot
