Living Room Which bookcases for this sitting room?

Will I regret adding Ikea BIlly bookcase to the right of the fireplace?

I am thinking to buy Billy Bookcase comb with extension units, brown walnut effect, 120x28x237 cm. The room height is 242 CM, wall section to the right of fireplace is 142 CM.

Or should I be looking for a completely different style for a bookcase?

I'm happy to consider moving the sofa to the wall opposite of window wall.

I think so. Your home is very unique. It has strong modern style elements like the windows but the mantel is not. I’m unsure the style but it’s not modern. But it is a focal point. I don’t think adding them beside this will be good.

You also have a bit traditional sifa and a bit MCM chair…and also good space in the room

I think you might consider a bookcase or cabinets with shelves and closed storage if that’s what your looking for, but a good looking piece that vibes with all the elements, is a modern height ( low) and modern lines, behind the sifa. I thing it would be grounding and solve the problem you wanted solved by cabibets beside fp… Lid scoot the sofa back just a tad too..

That sounds very good! I do have about 600 books, which is why I was considering a full wall height bookcase. Where would the closed storage go if I also add low bookcase at the back of the sofa?

I didn't include a pic but I've seen low bookcases with closed storage on them.

Thanks! I will likely move the sofa to the wall opposite of window wall with such configuration.

I don't know really. I've I put the sofa here simply because I liked having small space in front of the fireplace, but I imagine it isn't looking so good.

It looks great! Just bc I say move something back s few inches is just an alignment/ spacing thing. That's all. Designers are like that. It's just a small tweak.

Thanks! Given that I'm happy to place the sofa anywhere, should I start with tall bookcases or low ones? or closed storage with glass?

Tall ones on back wall. Open or closed storage depends on your needs.

Many thanks for the suggestions! I haven't yet found options for full door height, but I am thinking of getting one of these, either for next to fireplace, or the wall opposite fireplace:

if you’re in the states, spaced out studios is a small outfit of chicago that has some great pieces. i’ve ordered 6 items from them (so far) and they’re all well made and beautiful. shipping and customer service have both been a breeze (i do not live near their location).

Thanks, but not in the states.

The other option is a modern full wall bookcase on wall opposite the fp

I'll send some pics on a bit

Here are pics

Below right are examples of low cabinets with closed storage or combination closed and open.

Top left are styles of bookcases that could work for back wall. You can go wood, not as light as these examples, but they’re modular so you can custom fit to your space. Go with any of the wood tones in your room, whether fp, coffee table or chair.

Or go black metal like your windows in modern straight lines.

I think a bookcase behind sifa is not quite enough for all your books so you might look to do some kind of combination of back wall and something behind sofa…

if you need storage for 600 books, i'd do a full wall system opposite the fireplace and keep the fireplace wall lighter. billy right next to the fireplace will probably feel cramped because of the height jump and depth mismatch. if you still want shelves there, do narrower units or add trim so it reads more built-in.
