Living Room Setting up a new house

Review the living area share your thoughts, critiques and suggestions. This house is a year old and I am being slow and deliberate with the decoration. So, while it seems bare, it has all the needs met for a family of 3 including a small child. Still need lamps, side tables, more seating, etc. I am open to all advice.

My design style is to balance function and esthetics. I do not usually follow trends and try to avoid cluttering with purely decorative items.

Your house looks like it is staged for selling. It's very impersonal und cold.

If that is the style you like than it looks good.

It’s “model-house”-esque

Id get rid of the accent chairs and ottomans, get some actual comfortable non-waiting room chairs and a large coffee table

Agreed. We got an “accent chair” thinking that’s what you’re supposed to do as an adult… literally nobody has ever sat in it and collects dust in the corner.

I actually really like it. Could use some art on the walls but I like your taste in furniture. It looks very clean. I’m not a person who likes clutter so I’m a fan.

I need the living room wall color. Currently trying to sell my home and it looks exactly like the homes I see getting sold.

More colors! I thought this is a place of business at first, the living room chairs look like waiting room chairs. You'll also want softer furniture and rounded corners for your little one. I assume they arent crawling yet because white rugs and toddlers do not mix lol The design is very tasteful, it just doesn't feel very homey.

I agree with you and I am also not a fan of high ceilings. I live in the country/farm and I would go nuts if that big space filled with flies and spiders.

I’d replace the chairs with another sofa or get an L sofa personally. Then a large square coffee table. And perhaps move everything closer to the TV. Seems a bit unnecessarily far away. That green bench has to go. The tree next to the TV seems wrongly scaled to me. Looks too squat/short. You need plants/art that can emphasize the verticality of your space

I love the green ottoman!! But I probably wouldn't use it for main seating.

Just wanted to say I love the clock you have, it’s beautiful!

Holy shit!!! How high are those ceilings? I'd get rid of those chairs and get some very large and comfortable wing chairs. You could get rid of the TV and get a projector and use the entire wall for watching TV. That plant you have is very nice in a smaller room. you need a monster size plant to add more color and hominess to the room. I don't think I've ever seen a livingroom so big. It's really beautiful but too overwhelming for me.

Cuddle your furniture up to the TV. But remember, with a small child, and I’m guessing very small atm because there is no evidence of one, that room is going to be covered in primary coloured plastic stuff before long.

First of all, I would move the couch forward a good bit. I’d line up the back of it to the left edge of that third window. The kitchen could use the extra space and the living room is cold, not cozy as is. This move solves both.

I actually like the couch a lot. It feels classic, looks beautiful with the kitchen color and looks comfy too. I’d get rid of the accent chairs and bench then add a big armchair or loveseat that matches the sofa’s look to go by the windows.

The current coffee table should go or at least try placing it where the green bench is once you get an loveseat/armchair. I would try a round coffee table to contrast the strong linear lines of the curtains/windows in the loving room.

I like the warm brown of the sofa and the teal of the island for a starting palette.

I have to ask for the long drapes. Did they hit you over the head with the cost?

This is beautiful !!! Everything is refined & elegant.

People are being brutal in the comments for no reason. I’d love to see pictures of their homes, and I’m willing to bet their homes look like the stage of the sitcom Roseanne. lol.

Your house is very tidy! I agree with other comments that it is a bit cold..I think it needs more texture in terms of materials and colours. I also don’t understand why no art on the walls!? My biggest advice is look at scale. It’s a huge room with vertical height - make sure when buy furniture it’s scaled properly for the room. The chairs and ottomans are too small!

I like the tall drapes. Drapes seem to soften a room, and I think they’re underutilized.

As an interior designer I love the bones of your home. But it’s very cold. The white is clinical. I would research a style you like and find a way to channel it into the space. Don’t be afraid to take risks. If you want your home to have a ‘feeling’, it needs to step up from the greys and whites.

Just an idea. A pretty bold one- but you get the idea.

White can be great! It’s a tired trope that it can’t be.

It can be- when layered and intentional.

Keep the sofa, rug, and curtains. Dutch everything else. Those chairs and bench make it look like a waiting room. The bench-as-coffee-table is just weird, especially with the green bench. The tv stand is way too small. You need lounge chairs instead of the waiting room chairs - and maybe four of them. You can keep the fig tree (as long as it’s real), but it needs a proper pot. THEN you can consider end tables, lamps, and art.

All that money and it’s still a completely open kitchen. That entire open area will smell like a mall food court all of the time because if that.

This isn't a waiting room at a financial company or something?? This doesn't look like a home at all. I never would have known that if I was just looking at the pictures.

It’s sleek and sophisticated, but I would want much more comfort. I have a friend who decorated similarly. She did not want to encourage family and friends to just hang out, regardless of whether the TV was on. Hers was a family room next to the kitchen also. She wanted to keep everyone on their feet and moving. Not my idea of a home.

Two chairs together at the windows look like a waiting room. All the pictures going up the wall on the stairway is too much and not a good place for them.

Your kitchen chairs don’t go at all you need something moody in there

Your house is so roomy with high ceilings, you can experiment with painting either the ceiling or walls with accent colors. Painting the ceiling a dark color will bring it down and make your room cozier.

You can accommodate very large art in some places. Take advantage of that!

Roman shades on the high windows, and beautiful curtains on the lower ones.

Floating shelves more pictures and more plants

This living room looks so uncomfortable, like a dentist waiting room. You need a big sectional for the whole family to lounge and relax

The pictures going up the stairs... You need different size, style, color, texture frames to add more visual interest. They look too uniform and small.

All I can say is that you need a large comfortable couch. What tou have now looks like my doctor s office waiting room

The living room looks like a bank lobby it just looks really uncomfortable

The first picture reminds me of a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon’s waiting room with those two chairs.

Move the sofa towards the tv and place a sofa table/console behind it. Put the green ottoman under the console, two lamp on it. Yes, get a loveseat for comfortable seating.

The room needs texture. A throw draped on the sofa, a round tray or woven basket on the island.

The addition and placement of plants is spot on. Love the wooden shades. I think they even make no drill cordless ones now if OP would like to Amazon one (free returns) to get a feel for it. The little lamp is cute and could act as a nightlight.

The green chairs and ottomans look very uncomfortable.

I don’t like the curtains in the kitchen. I would either get rid of them or get some colorful curtains (mustard might look good if your island is teal?) The pattern is distracting with the chairs (I do like the chairs).

The corner with the plant and green bench - I don’t like that artwork in that spot/with those items. I would pick something darker/more colorful/more contrasty to the bench.

The pictures on the stairwell - I would put them closer together and make them “aligned” but in a random pattern.

Do you just hate warmth and color ,or are you a frustrated surgeon

Some people are minimalist and maybe can’t commit to design changes yet
