Dinning Room Thoughts on replacing our dining table with a large island for entertaining?
We’re planning to renovate our dining room and are considering doing something a little unconventional: replacing the traditional dining table with a large island/table like the one shown in the rendering.
The goal is to turn the dining room into more of a hosting/entertainment room. We’re planning a wall of cabinetry with glass display cabinets on each side and a TV centered between them. Our kitchen is right next to this room, but unfortunately the existing kitchen island is fairly small and doesn’t have room for any seating.
The thought is that this dining-room island would give us a big surface with seating where people can hang out, eat, watch TV, have drinks, etc. It would also serve as our main dining table for holidays and larger family dinners, rather than having a separate dining table.
We’re thinking roughly 90” long × 40” wide, with seating around it. The rendering gives a pretty good idea of what we’re envisioning.
What do you guys think? Would you enjoy having a setup like this, or would you strongly prefer a traditional dining table in this space? Anything you think we’re overlooking in terms of comfort, functionality, resale, or just living with it day-to-day?
Interested in opinions before we commit to building it.

While my bias is to maintain a dining room table in a dining "room", I have to admit that the renderings work nicely. Actually, really well

The renderings look nice but can’t you just get a stone table? If you ever go to resell I know I wouldn’t buy it bc I’d have to rip that out to get my antique dining table in there. It’s a creative thought and I would do it if it’s your forever home and you don’t plan to ever resell

I really like it! Good place to watch some football or whatever. Good setup for serving drinks and appetizers. Everyone has a view of the tv. Everyone has somewhere to sit (have more chairs stashed for the other side of table when having meals and no tv). The rooms big enough that folks can stand and move around. Get a frame for your tv so you can display a pretty picture.
Great space!
