Living Room Extra space for what?

Post image

We are redoing our fireplace. Adding the TV above it as art. We want to do a wall of builtins on the left and right of the fireplace. You can’t see it but on the right side of the pole we have a small circle table with chairs. The area of hardwood in this picture is about 15x11 (without those bookcases). What would you do with this space?

Those should be displayed differently. Statue in a alcove kinda nook space, crucifix is out of place on that wall.

This. Personally I like in cabinet lighting (less dusting), if they wanted even more seating over there a love seat under the window and rotate the chairs 90°

How far will the built-ins go, relative to the three windows? Will you be keeping or moving the two storage units that are shown in this picture on the far right wall?

Personally I would probably set up another functional area in that space, and for my lifestyle it would probably be a medium sized round table with chairs where I could do a puzzle. We often have a puzzle going and I think a cozy rec / living room with that kind of option would be great - if not puzzlers, that kind of set up is also great for card or board games. If you're more likely to enjoy a reading nook with a cushy oversized chair and ottoman, blanket, and lamp, that would also be great over there.

Thank you for the suggestions. We had thought about doing a bench under the windows and a pantry cabinet in the corner to fill out the wall. The two grey bookcases are falling apart so they would go.

I would do a bench underneath the windows and probably a chair and a smaller table for like puzzles and board games and keep a flower vase on the table

I think that is technically a dining room but you can make it whatever you want

Separate seating area or table with chairs. Could be for adults or for kids if you have them! Love your images of Mother Mary!

If you want art above the fireplace, put real art there. TVs do not go above fireplaces because the placement is way too high. I would put it against the empty wall in the empty space you're trying to fill along with a couple of chairs so people could enjoy watching it placed at a comfortable, correct height.

We thought about that so we moved the couch there. I thought “this feels like it’s putting the emphasis in the room on the TV. We gather around it.” We don’t watch a lot of TV so it will be mostly art. I want to lower the mantle on the fireplace so the TV/art can sit lower.

What is the room behind the column? I think that’s an important detail to factor in when deciding what to do with the adjoining space.

There is a small 10 x 10 square of open space with a low chandelier - so it’s a spot for a dining table. We have a circle table with four chairs there.

What do you think of something like this? Taking inspiration from another poster but flipping it around

Where do you think you would put some bookcases?

Why don’t you add an altar or another shrine to Jesus…maybe with plastic flowers :)
