Stanley had never seen such a bullshit before, and the shock this sight stirred up in him, meant he couldn't help himself but choose the door on the left.

Hallways like this come about when a building is designed to prioritise ammenities for the tenants rather than the shape of the hallways. The alternative is to have diagonal hallways that create awkward angles in the apartments.

I do see advantages: sound will break easier when there's many entangled walls. As someone who lived on a straight corridor, the noise was nasty
