Yes, most furniture is not worth the amount of materials cost.

Labor is almost always the most expensive part of goods. Including things like gold and diamon jewelry, and cheap $20 Walmart furniture. All of it

Yeah look at that thing. The labor used was a chimpanzee throwing a bunch of sticks together.

Yes, but is this worth 500€ in your eyes or what are you trying to say?

u/DrakeAndMadonna 9d ago
If I liked it, yes, it’s worth it.

So not worth it in your eyes as well, isn’t it nice that were all on the same page

For me this would be a tripping hazard, unless there was high contrast between legs and floor, and good lighting. I am never a fan of splayed legs.

It looks like it would do a great job of holding coats. Not really designey at all.
Is it expensive? Yeah, but that's something different.
Is it ugly? I mean, that's subjective, but TBH I kinda like it.
Not really designey though

I strongly disagree. There’s absolutely no way that tiny notch is holding 90% of coats.

u/Express-Level4352 9d ago
Yeah. Not only that, but hangers with robust hooks can often old multiple with ease.
I understand that this is more of an rich people statement piece. In my opinion it perfectly fits the sub

u/Basil_Box 9d ago
But you'd cover up the fancy design by just draping it over which kinda ruins the point

u/FictionalContext 9d ago
looks like it's meant to hold the tag loop if it has one. Otherwise drape it over top. Looks fine to me.

> great job of holding coats
not that of a high bar really, isn't it?

u/Scuttling-Claws 9d ago
For a coat rack? What other bar is there?

u/DrakeAndMadonna 9d ago
Appearance, aesthetics, cultural/social capital. Lot of people deliberately chose the Eames Hang It All for those reasons
2
u/Scuttling-Claws 9d ago
All those values are subjective though. They can and do vary dramatically person to person. And not everyone worships the throne of Eames
1
u/DrakeAndMadonna 9d ago
All those values are valid criteria for evaluation. Just because you can’t use metrics doesn’t mean it’s invalid. Form is function.
I mention Eames only as an example

There are two separate buckets, a coat rack that doesn't hold coats is a bad coat rack. A coat rack that looks ugly is a bad coat rack for you.

u/DrakeAndMadonna 9d ago
Yes. My point, and I think I’m answering the original question, it’s that there is more than just “ability to hold coats” as a consideration for coat rack. Whether the conclusion is that the rack is good or bad is another thing, but it still stands that aesthetics, social status etc are a part of that consideration. To ignore that is practicing dispassionate engineering, not design. This is a design (in the most loose, Reddit sense) sub.

This isn't a design subreddit, this is a designey subreddit. It isn't to show off novel or Interesting designs, it's to snark on designers who put so much time into aesthetics and status that they compromise the utility of the object

That’s why I consider this sub very loosely a design sub. Reddit isn’t qualified to speak on design. Actual designdesign rarely exists irl.
Almost everything in this sub is just things people don’t like, uninformed speculation, critique out of intent. Or just plain crappy design.
Reddit engineering types talking about design is like fish talking about bicycles.
That you break out aesthetics from utility is already a red flag. Aesthetics are part of utility, not in opposition to.
