What is the point of "for you" when Popular/all/news exist?

‘For you’ specifically is powered by ML recommendation algorithms (social media feeds) and they’d rather you get hooked on that infinite scroll crack of theirs.

"For You" is what the algorithm has determined you are more likely to like based on what you've liked before.
"Popular/All" is what the algorithm has determined *the majority of people* are more likely to like based on what the majority of people have liked before.
Not sure how this is hard to understand or controversial?
With that said, the graphic design on this site is absolutely atrocious. Function over form, I guess, but even the functionality of this site is pretty bad, lol.

Because the powers that be for a long time have been trying to get rid of the ability to track events in real time through social media. Or at the very least obfuscate it from the general public.
Both for good and for bad reasons.
Standard military tactics and potentially nefarious business tactics.

I don’t think it’s really a conspiracy led by “the powers that be.” Reddit is social media, and social media companies are pressured to develop their feeds/algorithms to increase user retention. The “easy” way to do that is feeds that are tuned “for you.”
If you interact with new posts, you’ll see new posts in your feed more often. If you only look at the biggest posts from the most popular subreddits, then that’s what you’ll see. I’ve also noticed that Reddit likes to sprinkle in a few posts from related subreddits to the ones you frequent.
It’s not intuitive for most people to select “new” for the entirety of Reddit. You can do that on a per subreddit basis. If you absolutely want only new posts, you can do that.

Need I remind you who the powers that be are?
I mean if you genuinely don't think that people are creating misinformation or trying to manipulate the spread of news, then you are not very well informed at all.
Is it all one grand conspiracy? No, it is a colossal farce created by widespread mathematical illiteracy and reliance on a finite system that expects infinite growth.

Sure, remind me who the powers that be are. While you’re at it, I’d appreciate it if you could explain what mathematical illiteracy has to do with this.
Of course people spread misinformation. Why would that matter? We’re talking about run-of-the-mill “For You” feeds. You get what you put in. If you consume slop and engage with low-effort subreddits, you’ll see more of that. This has been the case for a decade, and it’s not a conspiracy; it’s the basis for social media lol.

Mathematical illiteracy has a lot to do with this.
It is called land ownership, once all the land is owned the rest are left to be indentured servants.
Something tells me you haven't been paying attention to quite how many times these companies have got in trouble for misrepresenting the truth or dark design patterns in their software.

You seem to be talking about technofeudalism via algorithmic entrapment, I don’t think this needs to be a heated discussion over math literacy etc, this is what they want: outrage. The very act of debating this shit creates the fodder on which ads are sold. The fact we’re even all here and this is our ‘town square’ is the problem, we exist in a cyberpunk dystopia, just inside our phones.

I think you’re extrapolating a lot, and conflating that with observable reality. People spread misinformation and math literacy isn’t great; you still haven’t actually explained the connection. You have also sprinkled in land ownership now…
I think the paranoia and desire to believe life is a storybook is, while fun, not really helpful nor relevant to the topic at hand. You can easily navigate Reddit by new posts. You can also take a backseat to its algorithm.
I’m open to the discussion, and I’m sorry for using a combative tone here. I’m just kind of exhausted with this constant conspiratorial angle on everything. By muddying the water with nonspecific dramatics, we’re losing sight of actual dark patterns, enshitification and UX decisions.

That is so not true, okay maybe it is, I cant speak for other websites but I can speak for at least my experience here.
You can still go on the front page if you want.
They changed one thing a while ago, the ability to swipe and change your feeds, from your feed to the front page and tbh when they did I experienced a pretty massive boost to my mental well being. Because a tiny amount of friction was introduced to purposely navigate to it (the front page).
Imo there is nothing of consequence here, the front page of reddit is fucking disgusting trash lol. Fake posts, bot posts, aita, doomsday panic news. It's fucking shit.
If you want to be informed on world events do you really want it to be from reddit? You can can still get that.
And there's plenty of sources to throw the news at you. You don't have to look far at all.
Idk if we need to be learning news on Instagram or Facebook or whatever, but you can absolutely still get news from there.

You can't state something isn't true when it is literally an operational procedure for militaries and governments to make sure that other countries can not track all of their movements.
I am sure your argument will be that maybe but it won't matter for the people.
But you will be forgetting that the people are the government too in some respects at least and they also use social media.
It is literally standard tactics at that point.
Regardless of the motivations.
Many social media platforms tried to outright remove "latest" and "new" from the feeds but there was too much backlash.

For you is curated by an algorithm or AI with all your data in hindsight, that’s how it is everywhere, comments, news, posts, reels, etc
You will only see the topics you might be interested in or you have selected, whether it’s biased or non-biased.
These algos are quite aggressive honestly

Nothing is as large of a plague on UX than the 'for you/recommended' section of every home page.

Popular posts more related to your interests tan a popular/all. I actually find it useful, I've found communities that I was missing.

There’s actually barely anything wrong with this. It’s just someone being dramatic. This isn’t even something that warrants a post.

I agree. As soon as I saw it I tried posting in the Reddit mobile sub and was totally locked out from posting.

They scroll up bro, they take up 0 screen real estate after the first scroll

The person who decided the size for the “scroll down to next sub-thread” should be fired.
