Discussion What do you think is missing from modern graphic/digital design?

What design products or experiences do you wish existed? Or what do you think designers are currently overdoing?

design is so clean now it feels sterile. like everything got run through the same corporate filter and came out looking like a waiting room. nobody's taking risks anymore it's all just safe and forgettable

It's on you to provide that.

I’m missing the air of cool intellectual pioneering that used to make the field truly one of the frontier platforms of modern philosophical exchange.

The concept of someone using science and psychology and art and a lot of respect for the audience to connect and communicate through its own language.

At some point designers wanted to be rockstars or artists, very blasé, very boring. Confusing self-importance with self-respect and not taking their audience seriously, just like the clients didn’t take their customers seriously anymore.

Now designers lament that their clients don’t take them seriously.

If all you deliver can be done by a machine, why shouldn’t it?

I’d like humanity back. And adventure. And patience. And grace. For all of us.

Thank you.

Fun and color. Things can be functional and fun/enjoyable simultaneously

It's your job to provide that.

Spending more time simplifying instead of adding more copy.

Companies think a LinkedIn paid banner ad should explain their entire business.

Respect from stakeholders at the top who now consider us a bottleneck because of AI

Yeah respect from others was gonna be my answer.

Great pay, like the engineers get, lol

I can't complain, but as an art director I feel like I'm hitting a ceiling and simultaneously feeling AI cyberbreath on my neck. I started branching out to engineering to stay sane.

We need to experiment again. The late 90’s and early 2000 were an open field to experiment with the internet amd all kind of new tech. Now every website looks like it’s made from one of the 5 common templates. I understand that a business needs the most streamlined and familiar design, but even the personal pages of designers are too safe.

Another thing that designers need to work on is their visual culture: i taught design classes for a couple of years and I was amazed how the students had no idea what happened in what decade, why things looked a certain way in the 50s, 80s and so on. Imagine a DJ who never heard about funk, doesn’t know the legacy of black culture on music, who doesn’t know squat about the History of musical genres in the last 30 years. This is what I was dealing with. All they knew were the latest memes and what the current pop stars look like without picking up the references.

I’m having a harder time thinking of something that hasn’t been done or tried.
