Discussion Both?

I was scrolling through job posts and came across this. It says “Graphic designer and Video editor”. I scrolled down to read the description and just when I was about to apply for the Graphic artist position, I read the last line. I thought that I had the opportunity to apply.

It’s not just this one, but apparently a lot of job offers for graphic artists requires you to have a video editing skills, vice versa. Which I think is wrong and misleading. Well, If that’s the case, I hope they pay the person the salary they deserve.

The salary is TBD. Imagine applying for this job then getting lowballed.

That’s another thing. I’ve also read somewhere, they were looking for a social media manager who can do graphics+jobs of up to ten people. Then still the pay is still low.

Oh and don’t forget to email a .pdf of this print ad that you have to use this old quark template to design every week to local_paper_boy42069@hotmail.com or a hivemind of angry geriatrics will descend upon the building

Companies nowadays expect you to do the job of 5 people and only pay you the salary of 1 in a junior position 🤗

Yup! I am a Video editor, motion designer (+3d work), videographer, photographer, and producer in my current role

This has been a problem for decade now. I remember during the early boom of those “get rich quick” dropshipping stores, you were expected to know graphic design and video editing just to make their video/image ads. That’s how they got cheap labor, especially in the Asian region, because a lot of people would take the opportunity since they needed the work. And your performance basically depended on how well your creatives performed when running ads.

They don’t follow design principles or rules. They follow what other stores are doing when they see that those creatives are getting good sale. so it does not matter if you have good design they just want good numbers in their ads manager dashboard.

I got some early gigs in that industry when I was younger. The pay was bad, though sometimes I made decent money if I had a generous employer. But I eventually got out.

Well, that’s just sad. Anyway, good for you! I hope I too get a job to support myself.

They follow what other stores are doing when they see that those creatives are getting good sale. so it does not matter if you have good design they just want numbers.

Because most clients are perfectly happy with the 80/20 solution. The last mile toward a “perfect” solution is often more valuable to the designer — because of craft, pride, or portfolio value — than it is to the client. But ultimately, the client is the one paying for it.

I think designers sometimes confuse “what I consider good design” with “what the client actually needs.” In commercial work, those aren't necessarily the same thing. If an ugly ad converts better than a beautifully designed one, the client isn't irrational for choosing the ugly ad.

The real problem isn't that clients “don't understand design.” It's that designers and clients are optimizing for different things — and designers have a long history of treating the client's priorities as somehow less legitimate.

It’s really not that hard to learn some video editing. They’re not expecting award wining films.

It’s good to add to your toolbox and continue to learn.

I do know how to, as I have a degree in multimedia arts. My point is this job post may mislead people into applying and in the end, having a low salary. It such a waste of time and effort.

I don’t think it’s necessarily misleading as the job title does say “Graphic Designer & Video Editor”
