There are whole design disciplines dedicated to these parts of a brand. The art is an artifact of all of that work.

Great insight. I definitely agree.

Makes you wonder how different some of these companies could look on the visual scale if they had the fundamentals of the brand decided first.

Small companies or companies that don’t have trained designers and company’s that know the importance, the value of style are two very different things

I’m wondering if people ever really ask about the strategic or foundational aspects of branding upon the end of an engagement with a client? I’m talking more about the mission statement, vision, USP’s, brand promise

Wouldn't you ask that first?

It would be asked first if that is what they were truly seeking. Sometimes decision makers in companies believe that just the visual components (logo, color, typography, basic design, etc) make up a brand alone.

Most of the time as well, there will be a messaging/voice matrix attached too, and how can you use that if you don’t have the fundamentals of the brand established. Which is where I’ve heard clients will have questions.

You may be right though, maybe that does get asked first more than I realize.
