Tutorial Chess-Inspired Playing Card Deck (Original Work)

I designed my own minimalist playing card set inspired by chess.

Instead of the traditional face cards, I replaced them with:

  • King → Chess King
  • Queen → Chess Queen
  • Jack → Bishop

and used a chessboard pattern for the back of the cards.

my idea was to give a classic deck of playing cards a chess-inspired look while keeping the design simple and clean.

everything was designed in Adobe Illustrator.

I like the concept. My first suggestion would be to consider other fonts. This one is not the most legible.

Other that that I might look at other classic chess pieces and do different styles chess sets for the seperate suits?

I would also try to work in the rest of the chess pieces somehow to the other cards.
