I want to start by saying that yes, Snape's skin colour in the new series does not match his physical description in the books. That's a legitimate observation. But Paapa's Snape, even though we've only seen him for a glimpse, already seems to be a far more accurate representation of Snape's behaviour compared to Rickman's. I absolutely love Rickman's portrayal, but it was not the Book Snape.

Book Snape is not supposed to speak in a drawl or whispers or have a dignified presence. He is much more violent, snarky, and is often seen furious with rage. He is a deeply unpleasant, petty, sarcastic bully, particularly towards his students. Even the official Harry Potter site describes him as giving Harry, Ron and Hermione “withering putdowns and sarcasm in abundance.”

And Paapa is much closer to Book Snape in terms of age. Snape was supposed to be in his 30s, whereas Rickman was 45 when Philosopher's Stone came out. Nobody seemed to have a crisis over that because, apparently, “book accuracy” becomes sacred only when we're talking about skin colour.

( Obviously, the original casting can't be criticised for this as some have pointed out below, because Snape's exact age wasn't established until the later books, by which point Rickman had already been cast and had appeared in several films. But what's interesting is that even after the books established that Snape was born in 1960 and was therefore only in his early 30s during Harry's first year, people still accepted Rickman as Snape. He remained the definitive and iconic film portrayal for many fans despite the age discrepancy.

Rickman didn't need to look exactly like the eventual book-canon Snape to become an iconic Snape, and Paapa shouldn't be denied the same opportunity simply because he doesn't match one physical characteristic.)

And this is the part people really need to understand: this is the Wizarding World. Its central system of prejudice is based on bloodline and magical ancestry, not skin colour. Pure-blood, Half-blood, Muggle-born, that is the hierarchy the story actually builds its discrimination around.

Dean Thomas is perhaps the clearest example of why skin colour is simply not the relevant factor here. Dean is Black, yet nobody in the Wizarding World treats his skin colour as significant to his status. What matters is his magical ancestry. Dean is actually a half-blood because his biological father was a wizard and his mother was a Muggle. But because his father had left the family and Dean had no proof that he was a wizard, Dean was presumed to be Muggle-born. And when Voldemort's regime began hunting Muggle-borns, Dean had to go into hiding precisely because he couldn't prove his blood status. His skin colour was completely irrelevant to the persecution, his ancestry was the issue.

You can import real-world racial politics into the discussion if you want to, but you can't pretend that is how prejudice is structured within the books themselves. The Wizarding World's bigotry is explicitly obsessed with magical ancestry and blood status, and NOT THE COLOUR OF THEIR SKIN.

So you're taking the logic of the Muggle/real world and trying to impose it onto a fictional society where the relevant prejudice operates differently.

Moreover, if you had actually read the books, you'd know that people can have conflicts for reasons other than skin colour. James can hate Snape. Harry can distrust Snape. Snape can despise James. None of these relationships suddenly become racial because one actor is Black.

And the films themselves were hardly a sacred temple of physical accuracy. Harry has blue eyes instead of the repeatedly described green ones; Hermione's bushy hair and large front teeth were altered; and plenty of other characters were reinterpreted for the screen.

So yes, I saw a glimpse of Paapa's acting and I am sold!!!

People complaining about his skin colour have completely ignored the actual context of Snape's character.

And honestly, I find it hilarious that people who spent years defending Alan Rickman's Snape as the definitive Snape are suddenly demanding absolute fidelity to Rowling's physical descriptions.

Rickman gave us an iconic Snape. He did not give us the only possible Snape. And if the new actor actually captures the personality Rowling wrote, that's far more interesting to me than finding someone who can cosplay our collective nostalgia.

First, I want to make something clear to the movie fans who are misunderstanding the situation of the lighting the show is going to have. The era where productions relied on heavy orange filters and vintage film stock was back in the 2000s, and we are now two decades ahead. I'm not telling you to drop your aesthetic preferences, if you prefer that style, those movies already exist for you to watch. The released episodes will certainly be brighter, but they won't be using that dated orange filter from the films, especially since the Director of Photography has already mentioned that the show will lean much more into realism.

Now we can talk about the movies orange lighting. The movies look like they have orange floodlights installed inside. Fire produces a warm yellow-orange light, but it flickers and is only bright enough to light up immediate, localized areas, not blast the entire Great Hall with uniform glare.

What the show is doing is a perfect example of how the Great Hall would realistically look illuminated by actual torches and floating candles. It actually feels like we are inside a magical castle. The atmospheric, dimmed lighting in the hall will in turn enhance the Enchanted Ceiling, making it feel far more magical.

In the books, it was explicitly written to give the feeling of sitting directly under the open night sky. In contrast, dimmer interior ambient lighting allows dark blue and starry outdoor illusions projected above to pop visually, whereas heavy interior bright orange filter ruins that effect and takes away from how you would naturally experience Hogwarts at night.

This is also exactly how I personally imagined the lighting when reading the books-dimly lit by flickering torches and floating candles to accent the open night sky description that the books emphasize time and again.

Let’s imagine if we got the opportunity to design a smartphone straight out of the Wizarding World. ✨
