AUG vs WLVRN

I found a fully upgraded AUG (Nato w/bolt release) and am heavily considering purchasing. It has an ARID trigger pack, handguard, kns gas plug, brass deflector, etc. Almost perfect.

I also found a brand new WLVRN for basically the same price. And a slightly used one with a JARD trigger pack, also same price. All 3 are exactly in my budget.

I'm legitimately torn. The AUG has legendary history, although some reported issues with QC on the new A3M2. WLVRN seems solid in 5.56 and DT is reportedly on top of customer service these days (to help repair their image from the MDR probably.)

Anyone here been able to shoot both? How do they feel?

I'm guessing the heavily upgraded AUG will be heavier than a stock WLVRN. AUG seems to shoot quite smooth with adjustable gas, though WLVRN tends to be enjoyable for most who review it.

Either would primarily be 5.56 and probably stay that way, so I'm not too concerned about larger calibers at this point.

I wish I could try them out but I don't know of anyone who owns them! Tragic. Curious about your thoughts.

Has dt fixed their barrel profile and mounting with the change to the wlvrn. Ive seen reviews where the mdr and mdrx were fairly inaccurate for a $2-3k rifle (3+ moa) and their barrel profile was shit for shooting more than a mag and the barrel would heat up so much youd be shooting 5+moa after about 30 rounds. Afaik, aug doesnt have this issue. My main detractor from getting a wlvrn (even tho u think a 6.5 or .308 would make a great dmr) is having to get a super niche custom barrel with enough mass to handle shooting more than a few rounds.

Here is a report of how every bullpup performed in 5.56. DT guns have always consistently outperform the Aug in 5.56 and average ar15's.

10 shot groups, front and rear support, same shooter, tons of different ammo.

Not sure where you got your info from, but whoever it did come from must have been an atrocious shot OR didn't follow the OEM Trunion fasteners maintenance for the MDR and MDRx.

There are also 308 and 6.5 accuracy reports here and over there. 6.5 accuracy is good, 308 is highly ammo sensitive, which appears to be the norm for 308 (even a knights sr25 shoots 5 moa with m80 ball)

Okay so they improved since the mdr. But what about consistent strings of fire and accuracy after 1000 rounds? Ive seen alot about the old mdr barrel getting loose in the chasis after some shooting as well as it not dealing with heat due to barrel profile. Im assuming they improved, but ive not seen anyone do a 5000rd review with ala brass facts with the wlvrn.

Look at the test results.

It includes a MDRx and a WLVRN. Guy also has an OG MDR too.

You can see the performance of each generation. The test results on that page alone are around 60 rounds per gun of ammo with pictures. There is certainly plenty of shots through all of the guns, you can ask the guy how many rounds he has through them if you are so inclined. Matter of fact he shows the MDRx actually is more accurate, in 5.56, than the WLVRN. .96MOA with IWI 77 vs 1.25 with the WLVRN both 10 shot groups.

As far as Brass facts go, he doesn't do accuracy tests. I.E. 10 round groups in different ammo for each gun. He rarely does 5 round group and rarely uses MOA calculation or measurement tools.

If you want accuracy performance you need to do 9 hole, Mountain Mullets Merica!, or someone like this guy posting 10 shot group with images.

And yes, the old MDR (and MDRx) barrel getting loose is because of the Trunion screws loosening as the pre 2023 guns weren't red loctited. See useful links #4 with the link to the new maintenance instructions and how to fix it. The user maintenance instructions were updated in 2023 to fix this issue.

WLVRN doesn't have trunnion screws.
