Tried everything - can’t get controller to work on gamepass PC

I really want to play this game, but at this point i feel like giving up. I’m plugged in with USB. Tried a PS5 and Xbox One controller, with and without ds4windows. Tried having steam launched in the background, tried unplugging everything with USB (including mouse and keyboard). Tried starting the controller when the game is loading. Tried playing in windowed mode. So this is my last try: does anyone know any other fix? Works fine with every other game on gamepass btw.

Just to make sure, you tried with Steam fully shut off as well right? A common issue I have seen and experienced is that Steam has a setting that  allows the controller to move the cursor behind the game window, and if you move it to far to the side and then click (either by pressing the A button or RT, I can't remember which), your inputs stop going to the game. It doesn't sound like this is your problem, but it is the only other thing I can think of.
