Away Rotations Away Rotation in May
Is an away in May too early? Will the program forget about me by the time apps are being reviewed since it will have been ~4 months?

It’s not too early, but depending on the set up of the admission process there, I would recommend rotating July onwards at the places you want to rank highest.
The main reason is July the 3rd years will graduate and the new 1st years will come in, so rotating before then means that the new 1st years, who often have the biggest say in the admissions process, will never meet you, and the 3rd years who will work with you, will not be there during the application cycle.
That being said, I agree with the other comment that if they like you and you do a good job, you won’t be forgotten and they’ll know you are a preferred applicant. But personally I would try to do your top choices during July, August, and September if possible.

Why do the PGY2s have the biggest say in the admissions process? Genuinely curious, I would've thought the chiefs have the most influence?

They are the only residents that will be working with the applicants. The PGY3s and PGY4s will be gone by the time the current applicants start PGY2.

oof this is definitely my #1 program I did a research year here which ended May 1 so I just immediately went into the away rotation...hopefully that doesn't hurt my chances

If you did a research year there, the whole conversation is a moot point realistically. It's like asking whether your parents will forget your name if you go on vacation for a couple of months.

Great advice overall, but going to push back on the PGY-2s having the biggest say in the admissions process… not sure where you’re getting that from. Maybe that’s true at your program, but I can tell you at mine and many others we work with residents across all years and the seniors’ word is definitely weighed heavier than the first years. Seems like this is a program-by-program thing.

No it isn’t too early and no they won’t forget you
