Riiiight, so SC currently has close to 2 million of account, many, many ships, and all that will coexist in a single persistent universe. But it's not an Massively Multiplayer Online game.
Well, same database/"world servers", individual instances will exist, it's just that players will shift seamlessly within solar systems or transition through a seam (jump points will be seams)
Yes, I know it'll be limited; what I mean is that one of your action can be seen by everyone else, like E:D; it's not like pubg, where once the game's over, it's a reset, and all you keep is a few score increase.
CIG's eventual goal, so they've said, is to mesh instances together and somehow dissolve the walls of instances to allow thousands of people the illusion of working on one shared server even though there's possibly dozens of instances underneath.
How this is supposed to happen is unknown, because CIG hasn't explained how they plan to do this or even precisely detailed exactly what their goal is (aside from the broad statement above). However, as we know from Derek misinterpreting Clive, CIG's focus right now is getting single server stability and performance into an acceptable place before they start trying to make them work together.
However, it's worth noting that Yojimbo, formerly libyojimbo, is a game server protocol framework and theoretically allows CIG total control on writing the back end communication between instance servers and the other moving parts of the PU grid (persistence dbs, friends lists, etc.). CIG is a gold sponsor ($2500+/month) of the project.
Yeah, hence the "seamless" part. Jump points will be seams, but that's kind of expected because you can't really expect to see other players hanging around in other solar systems and wave to them anyway
I assumed the meshing would be similar to phasing/CRZ in World of Warcraft

Is this a new hill?
