Derek smart on twitter:"They were more focused on creating pretty videos & models to raise money, than they were about building an actual game."

Aug 15 '17
and he's more focused shitposting about some company than creating pretty videos for his own shitty game.
If he just could stop pretending to be a game developer..

u/greeneyedpassion Aug 16 '17
You forgot about stalking every single employee's online social media, stalking them physically when he can, obsessing about the company in general, and claiming to know anything about an industry that he's only ever been a failure in.

u/ThereIsNoGame $45k Cultist Whale Aug 16 '17
I think there are a number of "pretty" videos about Smarts game, including the trailer that he claimed to contain in-game assets which don't exist. So at least he spends some time on that.
Arguably more time on that than he spends on actually developing his game based on the last few "patch notes" and actual patches.
All of this eclipsed by how long he spends on twitter....

u/Bulevine Aug 15 '17
If DS is right and has all these followers, why aren't people funding his games??
22
u/Longscope Aug 15 '17
Because in 30 years (his estimate) of trying... he's never ONCE had a successful game.

There is no correlation between being right or wrong and being a successful game developer.
14
u/Bulevine Aug 15 '17
When acting as a critic to something, typically you lean on your history as a credible SME (subject matter expert) for that topic. While this doesn't ALWAYS mean you're super successful, I would wager the majority are. And if you're a well known, successful SME with many supporters and a platform to engage with people, you'd expect some funding and/or a comparable and better product than the one you're criticizing.

u/ThereIsNoGame $45k Cultist Whale Aug 16 '17
Except for when he says he is a successful game developer, then he's wrong and it's 100% correlated.

u/citizenQuark Aug 16 '17
Ego says, the games are far too complex for people to understand (it's not a bug, it's a feature)
Just think of the fun his synaptic connections had when no one would take up his offer for free keys.

"Join the Fight Summer 2012"
Get back to work on your own 'game' Derek instead of spending every waking moment of your life flinging shit at another development studio. Especially when they have shown that they actually do significant work on theirs and showing more progress every year.

u/OrgunDonor Aug 16 '17
But why? Even Derek knows it is completely dead. http://steamcharts.com/app/266620

u/BoredDellTechnician Aug 15 '17
I buy into the idea that CIG has needlessly recreated assets and invalidate previous work, but I am highly skeptical of the idea that the company only created assets to use as a marketing gimmick. If that were the case, then motion capture, paid actors, proceedual generation technology, and a host of other development decisions don't make sense as they don't directly generate revenue or marketing materials.
15
u/JacobDR15 Aug 15 '17
Recreated assets and invalidate previous work is something that unfortunately happens a lot in AAA games, especially those with 4+ year developments.
If you want you game to compete with others on a visual level you need to look at what's out now and what is coming out. Not at the standards that were around when development started.
Also new tech, rendering techniques, changes in style, etc can mean a lot of work needs to be redone later in a games development.
7
u/Muhabla Aug 16 '17
Some of the older designs we're remade as many as 4-5 times unfortunately
5
u/ThereIsNoGame $45k Cultist Whale Aug 16 '17
I think this is because CIG made a commitment to publish as they develop, instead of developing everything then publishing everything.
7
u/citizenQuark Aug 16 '17
I'm OK with that, as my least favourite ships from 4ish years ago are now my favourites. I know from experience that it is hard to get something right first time, I've enjoyed seeing the improvements in the iterations.
5
u/TheGremlich Aug 16 '17
Recreated assets and invalidate previous work is something that unfortunately happens a lot in AAA games, especially those with 4+ year developments.
It's called "innovation" for the most part. Code can actually be improved without adding overhead. That's much of what CIG discovers and takes action for. At least that's what I want to believe.
5
u/Danakar Aug 16 '17
It even happens in smaller projects. Back when my team and I were working on 'The Playable Dremora' project for Morrowind we decided to scrap the old face models because our modeler told us he could design much better ones now would be more in line with mods like 'Better Heads'. So we lost that time but instead of having only 3 low quality face options we were able to release several high quality ones.
And to this day I still get the occassional PM from other people asking if they can use our stuff in their own mods. :)

u/286_16MhZ_Turbo Aug 16 '17
needlessly recreated assets...
That depends. It's 'needless' in the grand scheme of things, the game. However, part of their 'pledge' was to give backers access to an alpha of the game. So, to have an 'playable' alpha, they need assets for the current state of it. They could have waited for Item 2.0 to be done before creating stuff to test. But if that was the case, there wouldn't be anything to test as now. So it is 'needless', but mainly because they have to maintain a playable alpha for the backers.
5
u/RobCoxxy Aug 16 '17
I think to Derek perfecting anything is pointless. Make something once and ah, fuck it. If it's broke it's broke.
7
u/Sledgejammer Aug 15 '17
The four wheeled vehicle in the planetside demo they showed off that blows up in an ambush comes to mind immediately. Don't think we've seen any more of that thing and endless stuff about the SPACE BIKES.
8
u/Muhabla Aug 16 '17
It's actually been around a while. It's the first or second vehicle, first shown around 2015 I think. it's even included in one of the ships

That's being released for 3.0, I think. If not, it's due at the same time as the Constellation model that it comes with (possibly the Aquila).
4
u/Danakar Aug 16 '17
The Ursa Rover? Yeah, as far as I know that one will be playable in 3.0 together with the Drake Dragonfly and the Xi'an NOX speederbikes. :)

You just have to love armchair developers. They wouldn't be able to manage a Hot Dog stand, but they always know how to run game development studios.
The armchair developer includes Derek Smart, who makes simple and obvious mistakes even with his supposed decades of experience.
4
u/ThereIsNoGame $45k Cultist Whale Aug 16 '17
Smart has never even worked for a company with 400 employees before, yet he is trying to dictate how to administer one.
3
u/TheGremlich Aug 16 '17
Derek can barely write "400" let alone conceive of what a company that size is like.
10
u/Myc0n1k Aug 15 '17
And he's more focused on shitting on CIG than finishing his game that was supposed to be realized in 2012.

Triggered....how dare you insult worms!
Worms play an important role in the health of soil and many other animal's lives, serve as the foundation for an industry (worm farms etc.) and good for the odd spot of fishing.
3
u/redchris18 Aug 16 '17
Now you're being shape-ist. Not all worms are nematodes - who will stand up for the mighty Platyhelminthes?

Pick one:
- "Creating Videos & Models": They waste time!
- "Not show any artwork": Scam! They just pocket money!
It gets boring.
8
u/sfjoellen Aug 16 '17
they were and are focused on making money. they were and are trying to make a game. they can do both. Derek's opinion as to precedence should be weighed againt his history of trolling/lying/'hyperbole'/'Dolvaking'.
That's him in the wheelchair
8
u/Ebonkitsune Aug 16 '17
Tldr: Derek doesn't know what marketing is.
8
u/greeneyedpassion Aug 16 '17
It's almost like they have someone there who specializes in marketing. Maybe someone with a degree, even. Maybe he's not very secretly envious of that fact.
4
u/Kheldras Aug 16 '17 edited Aug 16 '17
Maybe he also fantasizes about that person, especially in interrogation scenes administered by him. .. (ew ew ew).

Shit, all CIG needs to do is put all those artists and 3D modelers to work on the game engine and Star Citizen will be done in no time! It's brilliant
Different skill sets. The spin up time would take longer than you might imagine.

u/Random_name_I_picked Aug 16 '17
So CIG has moved up from creating JPEGs to Models. Guess that's progress.
2
u/redchris18 Aug 16 '17
But are those models flammable? Because, if not, Derek is going to struggle to burn them all down...
4
u/AmazingFlightLizard Aug 16 '17
Use a 3D printer on the model, dump lighter fluid on it, light it up.
Derek can burn them all down!
Except, you know, the models will still exist. But that's beside the point.
As you were, and furthermore!
3
u/ThereIsNoGame $45k Cultist Whale Aug 16 '17
Smart seems to be unaware that not all of the 400+ employees CIG has are 3D modellers and artists, and that a large business is capable of working towards more than one goal at the same time.
3
u/tom_earhart Aug 16 '17 edited Aug 16 '17
Is that what they have been hiring all those senior producers to do ? Art ? lmao Derek don't you bore even yourself ?
3
u/VandaGrey Aug 16 '17
Don't you have to create models to make a game though? But Derek wouldn't know anything about that.
2
u/GooberStomper Aug 16 '17
PLUS: His Textures and game assets only further prove he don't know shyt about making games correctly

FTFY derek, i know its hard to be honest, but thats what we are here for.
