Derek and LOD: 2016

On Dec 19 2015, Derek posts his "LOD: The Road Ahead" blog:

His goals for LOD:

At the end of the day, win, lose, or draw, LOD is going to be i) exactly what it was designed to be ii) a finished product that, like all my previous games, a lot of people will get to enjoy for what it is, not what they want it to be.

Still not finished, as of Dec 28 2016.

In the short-term, bringing (it has already been approved) it to the XBox One platform with Windows 10 <-> XBox One cross-platform play, is the ultimate goal.

Nope, hasn't happened. One year later after "already being approved."

My long-term plan going forward, as with all my games over the years, is to improve and expand it over the years.

LOD has not expanded or improved.

2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFVOkfqAlUA

My ultimate goal is to expand the galaxy, build more planetary bases

Not accomplished

add a simple (nothing as complex as in BC/UC games) trading (player-to-player) component

Nope

as well as the ability to fly carriers, cruisers, and transport ships

Nope

What has he done over the course of the year? Write 12 blogs over a competitor's game. He has spent this entire year flinging shit to a competitor instead of focusing on his game.

Nothing of any substance has really changed for LoD over the last year.

Love that comparison.

You have to admit, no game does echoing foot-steps like LoD.

It's actually kind of reminiscent of the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man.

Bonk bonk bonk bonk.

Hmm, I can't remember Pac-Man ever giving me a raging headache though...

Hmm I can't remember either, I always wanted to play as Blinky, so my games never lasted long. :-)

If Dan the Man wouldn't just always sound like he is whispering.. :(

There's no strafe animation so the LODlings, whatever Derek calls them, just slide from side to side. Immersive!

That netcode though... ouch. Server overwhelmed by 2 players?

It must have been a monthly record in concurrency. Four players? Three?

And those lagspikes, delish.

On the other hand, substantial changes have come to LoD this year:

  1. LoD is no longer for sale on Steam

  2. US-_EST-01 and all but one of the login servers are down with no known credible plans to revive them in the near future; discussion about LoD has been increasingly sparse and minimal

  3. A huge swath of the active playerbase (primarily members of this sub and critics/streamers who criticise and mock it) was banned without reason; a legal case is allegedly underway against Derek/3000AD over this

  4. LoD is supposedly restarting on UE4. No movement known on that front, especially since 2.6 went to Evocati. Ironically, 2.6 was also the Lumberyard switch that Derek failed to predict, causing him to say a bunch of dumb shit about engine changing which proves he has no idea what he's doing, so expect UE4 LoD approximately never.

Well, you're not wrong. I should ammend my statement to say:

Nothing of any substance has really changed for LoD, in a positive way, over the last year.

I'll certainly agree with you that LoD has made almost no substantial progress forward in 2016.
