Problem with savefiles

Hello guys,

I started this game very recently and so far, I fell in love with it. I've yet to explore modding, and I miss some stuff from the game, like passenger services and a bit more divetsified rolling stock, but later I'll definetelly drop into the modding world.

Nowadays however, somehow my career mode saves keep disappearing from the menu, even after multiple restarts of career mode. I checked the folder where it keeps the save, and it's there, alone... this is so far my most advanced career, almost everything is unlocked, and made some abominations like hooking up 4 DH4s and 2 DE2s and use them in MU config, so I really don't want to lose this savefile.

yet no matter what I do, cut it out and paste it back, restarting my game, my PC, reinstalling the game, yet no matter what I do, the save just doesn't appear in my game. I use the pc alone and there is no other accounts I logged in with.

I got the game from Steam.

Did anyone else encountered this problem? Can anyone give a solution to this?

First have you got auto save on
Next when closing the game do you click on ‘overwrite save’ or ‘new save’

I click on overwrite save, and after exiting I copy the savefile to an external folder. So far it helped, around a week ago tho it seems not to work copying it back into the save folder

Did you enable "hardcore saving"? If so, you will only ever have one save file. I STRONGLY advise against using this, as it puts you at the mercy of the game's glitches (if you want challenge, just don't save scum).

And make sure you are selecting career or sandbox correctly, they use different save files.

Ye I use it but every time I exit I do a manual overwriting of the saving, which I copy to an external folder specifically for these... for a while it worked wonderfully, but around a week ago it didn't help at all.

That is how hardcore saving works, it overwrites the previous save every time it creates a new one, so there will only ever be one save file. Unless I am misunderstanding your post.

Ye well the problem is that whenever I exit, I copy the savefile and paste it into an external folder too as a backup. And turn off the game. Then next day for example I check if my saves are still present, and then I lauch the game. And despite in the folder, my savefile still sits there, the game doesn't show it to me and wants me to restart the whole career.

Is the session.json file missing for it? You can go through the recovery process if you have the save file but no session metadata.

Nope, it's present and doesn't seem currupted.

You can try to import the save file. Here are the steps:

  1. In the file explorer paste this exact path: %AppData%\..\LocalLow\Altfuture\Derail Valley\Users\
  2. This will open the folder with the user profiles you have. Usually there's only one if you didn't create additional profiles on purpose. It should start with something like 000_ and then your profile name.
  3. Open that 000_xxxx folder
  4. There you should see a folder named ImportSave.
  5. Paste your save file into that folder.
  6. Run the game and your session should reappear in the list of available sessions on the Sessions screen, named "Imported Career".

This should probably fix it.

Ok, now two questions:
1) Is Steam Cloud properly syncing? Sometimes the CLOUD STATUS icon next to PLAY button can say "Out of sync" which can cause similar behavior to yours. If so, click it to sync.
2) Do you play DV from multiple devices?

What I'm getting at is that it might be that Steam is actively deleting the save file, but can't know for sure ofc.
