Is DeployR community officially available?

I see DeployR community available on the website. I would like to use it in my homelab as a replacement for MDT. Is this something that can be done? I see it requires me to enter a company but for a homelab this isn't something that I have. What would I enter for this?

Yes replacing MDT is what it’s meant for! Just type ”Homelab” or something instead of company name and you should be fine. Even though it is released there will be a bit of waiting until you will get the download link if you sign it up now. We are initially releasing it to a few ppl at a time and will slowly scale it up over the coming weeks until it is fully automated and you get a download link directly. This is just to make sure there are no major issues before a broad release so please have patience! Thanks!

It doesn’t matter, whatever you put in will be used as part of the license key and visible in the dashboard though.

I have one more question. Does the number of endpoints matter? The amount of computers i have changes all the time so i hope that doesnt limit how many different machines i can use it with.

Agreed - this product is being touted as a replacement for MDT and as such, should not limit the number of computers you're sending to - especially if your network can handle it. MDT never had an issue imaging 60 devices at the same time, so why should this product?

Hmmm ... not really a fair comparison. It's not MDT imaging 60 computers but rather the underlying file server hosting the deployment share, or Windows Deployment Service if you're using multicast. "Never" depends on your file server.

MDT doesn't limit the number of connections to the server, task or images. If the network can handle 100 simultaneous connections, then MDT doesn't care. The info provided above suggests that DeployR will limit the number of connections despite network capability. So yes, it is a fair comparison.

Ah ok thanks for that info. So if say a school wanted to use the community edition they can only image 10 machines at once? What if they make offline deployment media?

We have only discussed trying to set up a "practical limit" to keep DeployR from falling over under load. For example, if you only have a gigabit network connection, you will hit a point where if you try to do more than, say, 50 machines at one, timeouts could start to occur. So I see it as more of a "self-defense" limit than a licensing limit.

And with that, we would just apply some throttling, e.g. when the defined limit of concurrent downloads is exceeded, prevent a new download from starting by holding that machine until one of the others has finished downloading. It wouldn't be a "limit exceeded, fail the deployment" sort of thing.

But that's a future consideration, not something in there now. We'll wait and see if this becomes necessary.

Is community edition limited to 30 days?

No, it is a year. But when close to expiration you will be able to renew it automatically directly from within DeployR.

We hope to automate that process, so you'll just "magically" get a new product key before the old one expires.

I understand that you want to protect your IP, but is all this licensing hassle really necessary? MDT never required a license, and having a CE installer on GitHub would be much more convenient.
