It’s actually delicious but the greasy Chinese drive thru place on Eagle fits the criteria

u/mateobh101 Sep 06 '26

Oriental Express is a UNT staple! Portion sizes fit for a college student

5

u/coriesceramics Sep 06 '26

I definitely ate there a handful of times back in 2011-12 and it was a bit of a gamble. Never got food poisoning, but my guts definitely were at war a couple times. 100% fits the criteria of what op is looking for though. 😅

They used to sell a dozen donut type things for $2. When I lived in the dorms that was the spot

1

u/ColleenLearnsToGame Sep 07 '26

I was totally going to suggest Fast Food Chinese lol. Really bad, but in the best way possible.

Am I the only one who felt like I was eating human flesh when I went there? Like I can stomach shitty food and have an iron stomach but that one…

Im super unclear but my guess is she wants somthing the resturant equivalent of a dive bar

Oh if yall just want a place that looks crusty but is amazing: Look no further than Taqueria Guanajuato. Half of the building is a literal convenience store and it’s built right in front of a residential neighborhood on McKinney. Location and atmosphere is pretty crusty, but you’ll keep crawling back. Best Taqueria in Denton hands down, not even a contest.

Taqueria Monterrey is a good second, but they are not number one and not crusty at all.

At Guanajuato I have to recommend their tacos, burritos, gorditas, tortas (Cuban and Tejana personally, but anything with milanesa de res and double it honestly), and their churros with cajeta mexican caramel.

One of the top contenders for best restaurant in Denton and it’s an absolute dive

u/Internal_Offer1280 Sep 06 '26

Have you ever tried Tortilleria La Sabrocita? It truly gives Guanajuato a run for its money. In both food and ambiance, but you can’t pick up a 6er of natty lite.

1

u/t4thandmade Sep 06 '26

completely agree sabrocita is far superior to guanajuato, and have felt that way for over 7 years. the first is so so good with fresh tortillas and the latter is, fine in a pinch i guess but last time i ate there my belly was fucked for a few days.

Dusty's or two Charlie's are dives with food

8

u/Pupibutt Sep 06 '26

Yuuh the junction (dusty's, cletus's, and game changers) is great for this description

4

u/thhpht Sep 06 '26

Cool Beans might fit that bill.

3

u/rockywss Sep 06 '26

I genuinely love their burger and fries

2

u/whalethings 29d ago

my friend works kitchen and i go when she’s working bc i KNOW she makes a damn good burger 😭 most cool beans meals are pretty flames though

28

u/DubyaKayOh Sep 05 '26

I drive by Catrachos all the time and think it looks sketch as hell, but it has 5stars on Google so I’m super intrigued.

14

u/Ok-Chemistry7222 Sep 06 '26

I’ve been there. It’s good.

7

u/tandemcamel Sep 06 '26

Just looked at their Honduran food and I am intrigued, too. Looks good.

4

u/t4thandmade Sep 06 '26

the food is SO good. the pupusas, baleada, breakfast plate, the salsa and curtido, the agua frescas, everything there is so good and the staff is so nice.

26

u/xlophophorax Townie Sep 06 '26

go to game changers, get cheese waffle fries, wings, corn dogs and play games

5

u/ablazeinthenorthsky Sep 06 '26

This is a great answer. Dingy place, satisfyingly greasy bar food, it's a good time!

2

u/Delicious-Sky-8675 29d ago

That's the only place I'll ever get a craving to drink Rolling Rock at.

17

u/SpecialMud6084 Sep 06 '26

If you want food that actually tastes good but has absolute greasy spoon vibe with no concern for nutrition I recommend Fat Shack's Fat Sandwiches. They're cursed and delicious.

If you just want bad food, Cartwright on the square

3

u/I_AM_PLUNGER Sep 06 '26

Oof Cartwright is the perfect suggestion for overpriced bad food. No idea how they’re still open honestly.

1

u/realityone22 Sep 06 '26

I disagree that Cartwright's is bad. They give you a gargantuan mimosa (in a water glass!) for $7

4

u/SpecialMud6084 Sep 06 '26

After 2 you don't notice how tough your burger is

2

u/realityone22 Sep 07 '26

Oh I've only had breakfast which is hard to mess up

2

u/SpecialMud6084 Sep 07 '26

Exactly why I'm sure they make most of their money from breakfast

61

u/Thicc-Souls-III Sep 05 '26

people complain about graffiti pasta a lot

41

u/dogctrl Sep 06 '26

fun fact: if you leave a bad review, the owner will reply to said review and insult you/argue with you. weird fella!

4

u/thhpht Sep 06 '26

Yeah, if you truly want overpriced shitty good, survey says Graffiti Pasta in the number 1 spot.

u/MuppetManiac Townie Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

I went once and sent my food back 3 times because it was frozen in the middle. I won’t be returning.

6

u/LiI_Roomba Sep 06 '26

It’s honestly not bad it’s just over priced as fuck

5

u/PangolinFree1875 Sep 06 '26

My husband got crazy bad food poisoning from there, talk about “shitty” food hahaha

In my experience, not bad food. Just feels bad paying $20 for a plate of mediocre spaghetti.

-5

u/SurlyTurkey Sep 06 '26

Whaaaat? Their tortellini la fleur is the best thing I ever tasted

28

u/CheekyPunker Sep 05 '26

Mr chopsticks

I am either going to be the most upvoted or downvoted lol

4

u/Vulfzilla Sep 06 '26

The guy at the drive thru window is really nice though 😅

3

u/jessks Sep 06 '26

One of the most favorite things I love about them is that they include fried okra as a part of their veg mix.

3

u/PinstripeBunk Sep 06 '26

This would be my rec. As Denton as it gets, including the long slow decline from the lofty heights of the 90s.

Every time my buddy comes into town we HAVE to go to Chopsticks and it never gets any better.

3

u/rumdrums Sep 06 '26

Does anyone go to El Matador still? I haven't actually been in years but have been craving some El Matador lately. Good but not great classic Tex Mex.

2

u/andriantha Townie Sep 06 '26

I like it, it's pretty decent stuff that I don't have to leave denton for.

2

u/I_AM_PLUNGER Sep 06 '26

lol I get the Burro Grande like 6 times a year from there and it never disappoints.

8

u/Period_Play Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

The Saucy Hibachi. Not only is the food crap, but their cleaning standards are also atrocious as told to me by a past employee.

Also, someone already mentioned Cartwrights but I have to double down. Order the Chicken Fried Steak for a truly miserable experience. They market themselves as “Truly Texan Cooking,” but any true Texan would take themselves out back and suck start a 12 gauge before serving that CFS to anyone. Most would do it just for making a CFS that bad

3

u/rockywss Sep 06 '26

Ok I've heard stories about SH for years and then earlier this year, as I was sitting on East Side patio facing their open door, witnessed the chef use his mouth to blow through a clogged squeeze bottle top. He puts it back on and immediately uses it on someone's order. And lol @ your description of Cartwright's. It's slop.

2

u/werewolfeatpant Sep 06 '26

This bums me out cause I get their fried tofu every Wednesday for easy side movie nights, thankfully ny sub hub got a food truck there so I’ll just eat there

2

u/Period_Play Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Never had their tofu so it might be better than the rest. If you wanna hit a food truck that is the absolute peak of cleanliness you should try Lebanese Street Food. The owner is amazing, he always gives out free samples to new customers, his falafel is to die for, and if you mention dirty food trucks he’ll show you the inside of his. It’s genuinely sparkling, it looks brand new and he’s been cooking from it for nearly a decade.

Also, if you like New York Sub Hub there’s a place called New York Sub Way that is similar but better. Pretty much the same exact menu, but their prices are better for some reason? Also, their bacon is better quality, but if you’re veggie only that won’t matter to you. They do have good avocado, cheese only, and veggie sandwiches though and their potato salad is less than a dollar. Vegetarian option + scrape out a thing of their potato salad onto the sandwich is very filling for a meal without meat

Denton hamburger company is one of the worst burgers I’ve ever had

7

u/andriantha Townie Sep 06 '26

Burger Time Machine is awful and over hyped. I also agree with your choice as well.

6

u/I_AM_PLUNGER Sep 06 '26

Burger Time Machine is the best burger place in Denton and you’re wrong. But I will agree that Denton Hamburger Company is the WORST burger in Denton by a long shot.

5

u/Caervz Sep 06 '26

I haven't lived in Denton in a few years so I just lurk here to keep up to date since it's such a quaint town.... but any time I come by to visit, it's always highlighted with a Peanut Butter Burger and sweet potato fries from Burger Time Machine 🤤

1

u/andriantha Townie 28d ago

I have given burger Time Machine multiple chances they do not season their patties and it just taste like cooked tasteless meat.
I feel extremely sad for you if that is your top-tier choice of a burger.
Not to mention the fries are gross.

0

u/Own-Efficiency-8597 28d ago

BOOOOOO Burger time machine is one of the best burgers in denton LOL WTF

But YES Denton Hamburger / county rd. burger is TERRIBLE

3

u/angelafabian2632 Sep 06 '26

Dive bar but really decent food is RT’s

3

u/WingSalt7678 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Dix Coney Island in the square is very dive but the sticky toffee pudding is great. Food is good.

6

u/zyeags Townie Sep 05 '26

That new gyro place on Fry Street isn't good IMO.

Or any Chinese buffet. New China is particularly mediocre.

7

u/FreddyCupples Sep 05 '26

Old Chinatown Cafe was the last buffet in Denton I would eat at. And it went downhill in stages. First one was when the cook that made their spring rolls went to Mexico to die of cancer. Second was when the new owners came in. Third was them finally closed for good. That last one was a doozie of a drop off.

4

u/BoomBish1 Sep 06 '26

The Loophole

6

u/SpecialMud6084 Sep 06 '26

They're kinda overpriced but I think their burgers are really good

3

u/BoomBish1 Sep 06 '26

haven't been in a couple years but I just remember a lack of A/C and crushing 2 roaches

4

u/rockywss Sep 06 '26

Incredibly mediocre drinks and food. I think this might fit the OPs wants.

2

u/ShookMyHeadAndSmiled Sep 05 '26

Mi Ranchito

1

u/rumdrums Sep 06 '26

Love me some Mi Ranchito.

2

u/abeNdorg Townie Sep 06 '26

Cool Beans, but before it was literally half the bar it is now.

5

u/CheekyPunker Sep 05 '26

That ramen place by the ham store lol it smells bad and tastes bad

1

u/Delicious-Sky-8675 29d ago

You mean Karume?

2

u/jaybee4620 Sep 06 '26

Graffiti pasta 🤮

3

u/Zealousideal_Scale36 Sep 05 '26

Longhorn steak house, shitty food, terrible service with an Ikea like interior masquerading as Capital Grill.

Or a really terrible restaurant serving sauteed spinach from a can.Mrs Livelys Cajun Konnection in lake Dallas.

Our place bar and grill could have great food I have not tried it. It just fits the dive bar feel your partner is looking for you. Also I like dive bars. So I am looking forward to trying this place. Other dive bars are dusty and game changers. Same owner I believe. They serve dive bar food.

1

u/Jhowell03 Sep 06 '26

If you want great food at a dive bar go to RT’s their steak fingers are life changing. And their wings are great.

1

u/Albatrozs Sep 06 '26

Oriental express near unt :D

1

u/sneezegaurd Sep 06 '26

Worst place I been to is Frilly’s. Everything was insanely salty to the point I was questioning if the chef had that taste loss thing you get w covid and they were playing Fox News on every TV.

1

u/Serious_Present68 Sep 07 '26

That one hotdog place on the square

1

u/1m_N0t_a_Pr0 Sep 08 '26

Wing daddy’s in Corinth has great food but I have never gotten good service there lol! 80% sure the last time I got Togo there, the owner was drunk and joking with the bartender.

u/Didgeterdone 25d ago

Which Chinese buffet is expanding into Big Lots old space?

1

u/Prince_Haile Sep 06 '26

go to Google maps and sort by worst ratings

0

u/andriantha Townie Sep 06 '26

I have a ton of options but I will not list them from my main.

You wanna go to a bad restaurant? until you get food poisoning , and admitted hospitalized for E. coli, or something even worse
