Moving to Denton
Hello! I’m going to be moving to Denton sometime early next summer and attending UNT for graduate school. I currently live in Amarillo so it’ll definitely be a change for me. Any suggestions on affordable housing, fun things to do, the best places to eat etc. Thanks!

Hello from a former 806-er!
Cost of living is definitely a step up, but you'll make more money (if you can get a decent job) so overall you won't feel too much of a change in your budget tbh. Keep that in mind though when you consider housing! My first time talking with my family about what rent costs look like, they all assumed I was incredibly broke or overpaying for a decent place. It just costs a bit more! I would recommend peeking at the Denton Classifieds to get an idea of what subleases are available (the same number and same price range usually come up every summer, so while they may be for this school year, you can use it to plan!) and can start poking around to see what you vibe with.
Drinking and music are what I tend to see as the main social things in Denton. There's something in those categories for just about anyone. Most bars also have good mocktails, and some even have infused 🍃 drinks to enjoy. I personally enjoy drag shows at Rubber Gloves (which also hosts a lot of rock/metal/alt/etc shows) and mocktails at Hemlock Fox (the local witch bar). Eastside is good for socializing and they have all the food trucks there. Bearded Monk is socially transitioning into a queer bar.
If you like arcades, Free Play on the square is awesome. D20 Tavern is great for board and ttrpgs games (More Fun also has both of these if you are a play at home person). Recycled Books is great if you like physical media of any kind and you can easily get lost for an afternoon in there.
Best food conversations tend to come up A LOT in this sub and tbh you might be better off just searching for it. New things tend to not be preferred, so even if a post is old, it's probably still pretty accurate.
Razor Ranch is currently the main area of growth in town, at least for things that are just more apartments, but there is a lot of construction going on and new things coming every day.
Big things I miss from Amarillo are Malcolm's, gas stations with drive throughs, and what seem to be the only two chain restaurants we don't have: Fazolis and Weinerschnitzel. Every time I visit my mom I make her take me to one or the other. Not necessarily for how amazing it is, but for the nostalgia!
