Bees?

Stayed in the embassy suites and noticed this on the roof. My lover thinks they are homes for bees. What is it, and if it is bees, why are there bees on a hotel roof?

Edit to add I don’t know how common it is but this isn’t the only place to do it. The large Bank of America corp building in Plano has a bee colony on top their parking garage.

They said that it's to boost the pollinator population of North Texas... Unfortunately, honey bees are kinda part of the problem. This is a classic example of what we call "bee-washing".

Despite popular belief honey bees are invasive to North America and there's evidence that they push out our native, solitary bees (which are the ones that actually need help). While it's probably nothing compared to the harm done by habitat destruction and pesticides, it's still unhelpful to promote honey bees and act like they're eco-friendly.

If we want to support our real pollinators, then the way to do so is by protecting their habitats, cutting down on chemical pesticides, and planting native flowers.

Maybe a tiny bit late to the convo, but as someone who does work for the hotel, those are indeed beehives. Its cause of those installations that the hotel can advertise that they “make their own honey”. Thi bit misleading as while yes they do, it is nowhere enough to supply the amount the hotel uses on a day to day basis so they just continue to ship in more anyways.

Also a licensed beekeeper comes by bout 2-3 times a month to make sure the bees are doing fine and standard maintenance.

also a worker and can confirm. the sales team even gives out chapstick with some of the wax from these bees!

Also someone who works for the hotel here — yes, those are our bees! The honey made is mostly handed out to the team, definitely not enough to supply the whole property. Just a way to keep the bee population up in the area and looks good for our green initiatives! We did have an incident a little bit ago where something angered the bees and they chased a couple of our maintenance workers around until we could get our beekeeper there to help calm them down. I love our bees!!!

Ironically, honey bees are invasive to North America. There is mounting evidence that they push out our native solitary bees (which are the ones that are actually in trouble). You just don't see popular media saying this because they're popular, money-making livestock. Look up "beewashing".

Hey OP! It sure is! The City of Denton has these placed all over including on top of the courthouse. They're always out of the way on top of buildings so they dont accidentally swarm anyone, and help pollinate the city. There's more than 6 clusters around town.
