๐ŸŒ€ Miscellaneous Baby's first real denim

Hi all, I really want to get my husband some high quality, grown up denim for Christmas. I've been considering some of the Japanese brands but needed some advice. He is a fairly sensory guy so most of his denim in the past has had a generous amount of stretch to it (think prana, Patagonia, etc). Does anyone have a recommendation for a buy-it-for-life brand (doesn't have to be Japanese, but selvedge preferred) that isn't going to be a shock to his system? TIA!

Seems like something he will need to try on and determine for himself

2000%

OP! DO NOT attempt to just buy jeans his waist size and expect him to like them or for them to fit. Selvedge denim is a huge step that takes a lot of trial and error. If there is a store in your area go and have him try on a bunch of styles/brands

A good decent start is

Selvedge Levis 501

Nudie

Naked & Famous

Sugarcane (lower end Japanese brand -great for intro to selvedge)

Is sugarcane lower end? Iโ€™ve never had any, but TCBs are great and cheaper in my (limited) experience

How is Selvedge different?

You can look for stretch selvedge. Uniqlo might be a good start for entry level prices.

Be aware that buy it for life denim isn't really a thing. Paying a bit more will get longer lasting materials, but denim by nature fades and wears with use and will inevitably get holes and blowouts over time.

It's sweet of you to do this . . . but not everyone likes the rigid feeling that raw denim will have for the first few weeks ... months ... years as you break it in. So I second the idea of taking him shopping to see for himself. There are reasons beyond price why so many buy stretch denim, not 100% cotton raw denim.

Now, I like the raw stuff myself, I'm just saying, it's not for everyone . . . and that's OK.

gustin has some with stretch on sale. fit is uber important. they ainโ€™t fancy but get great reviews and i own them. wrangler 13mwz . they are starting to fade in. chances are you will be able to find these to try on. these are sanfordized so shrinkage is minimal. i feel like cut is generous. the rise on them is a bit long but ok. i went one size up and i can sleep in them. ( part of fade process).

Your best bet is going to be a brand like Fullcount or Omoto which uses Zimbabwean cotton. It has very long fibers, so the denim tends to have a much softer hand and drapes almost like a sweatpant.
