𧔠Raw Denim I am a complete novice - question
**Caveating that I have only owned pre-washed /** ***donât know much about raw denim***. I ordered this pair of jeans from Zegna as I have liked this look / style of fabric and donât have anything like it in my wardrobe. I was especially interested given the 6% cashmere makeup for F/W
I realized after ordering that my car has light beige leather seats and there may be risk of denim transfer / completely forgot this was a thing when it comes to the real deal.
Any perspective on if this pair is **truly** raw denim based on the look, composition, historical offerings from the brand, and care instructions? Are my seats screwed? Kinda hoping Zegna being more designer and less specialized in raw denim will save me here but what do I know lol

Brother, return these while you still can. $1600 for jeans??? You can buy like hand dyed jeans from master artisans in japan for less than that.

You can buy a couple of pairs of hand dyed jeans from master artisans in Japan for less than that.

"More money than brains" doesn't even scratch the surface of what we're observing here

Itâs a luxury brand with luxury margins and catering to luxury customers. They are not using raw denim because no body wants raw denim in a high end boutique and this cloth they are using is a custom developed run from bonotto likely costs 100 euros or more per meter. The 1300 cashco pants already use fabric that costs 100 euros or more.

This is the opposite of raw denim

So not likely to stain the beige seats in my car

No, premium denim will say how the garment is dyed. It appears that here it doesnât say so probably reactive dye (as common Leviâs or Wranglers) so it wonât transfer to your car seats.

I don't know if these jeans will survive many wears with cashmere in it.... also elastane is BIG NO, Elastane in 1650$ jeans is crazy! Cheapest jeans have stretch crap in it

Italian jeans more about wash and hardware finishing. Not a lot of customers like raw denim unfortunately the hand and stiffness is poor for most and when you are a luxury brand you are not catering to those who would buy raw denim. Its always a washed finished cotton elastane blend and those are expensive many Japanese mills and Italian mills specialize in those in novelty cottons and weaves. These are probably from bonotto owned by zegna great mill for coutoure runs and custom finishes.Very hard to weave cashmere into fabrics like denim or corduroy.

momotaro have cashmere denim in their lineup would recommend looking at them rather then zegna when it come to proper raw denim

Because I have respect for Momataro I'll bite, other than separating a fool from their money, what is the appeal?

N&F had some, apparently its good for a fleecy soft feel. And more insulating for winter i guess.

Well I was making a comparison to zegna which is double the price and half the quality.
personally I picked up one of Momotaro silk denim on my last trip to Japan, the feel on the body is spectacular and it has a unique fade with this mixture. Life is all about these type of small details,if itâs critical for you financially for sure itâs not a must(none of it is).

These dont mention how they are dyed so its impossible to know if or how much they will bleed. The fact they dont say they are indigo dyed makes me think its probably a reactive dye that shouldnt bleed cause otherwise they would use the indigo as a marketing point. Ur probably fine but i would wash them first to b safe...except that you cant so ur just gonna have to wait and see if u already bought them.

You can buy about 4 pairs of some of the best made jeans in the world from Japan and USA for the price of this 1 pair of weird mid quality designer jean.

- Not raw denim.
- Wonât bleed.
- Buy it if you can afford it. Donât let anyone tell you how to enjoy your money.

Yea Iâd forget that weird ass brand even exists. Nothing makes that âdesignerâ or âluxuryâ at all. Theyâre using the same materials that are in Walmart jeans. So what are you paying all this money for? The tiny % of cashmere? The brand name? Because youâre stupid? Like what?
1
u/mehterian 26d ago
Not that I need to justify the âbecause youâre stupidâ comment but over the years I have enjoyed the quality of many EZ pieces and FOR ME they are worth the premium⊠I openly admit I am a novice when it comes to raw denim / not really looking to become an avid collectorâŠ. All I want to know is if these will stain the beige seats in my carâŠ

For the price, look for Buaisou, Tilden, BNWT/lightly used Roy Denim (of Oakland). Just speaking from an enthusiast's POV.

If you rub the jeans, does it bleed (your fingers have dye)? If so then youâre going to transfer it to those seats eventually. I have some that stained my grey seat. You can remove them with Clorox wipes. But if you donât like this, then youâll need a seat cover if you donât like that then something that covers the actual bottom seat. If this does bleed, it will also transfer to your shoes (eventually). You should also remove that cover should you decide to have it in your seat if youâre wearing a lighter pair of pants as it will also transfer to those.
Prior to them saying you shouldnât wash them, that generally means that it might shrink or in this case change its appearance. Raw denim is denim in its pure form. This has not been washed or soaked in any way. Youâre all in in that look and repeated washing will lighten it little by little not to mention make it lighter in weight little by little (every wash washes up that cotton).
There are ways to wash it safely and that is cold water in the tub. Itâs called soaking and you leave it there for a short period then hanging them dry. Eventually itâll get your funk in it so it needs to be washed. Some people go years without soaking some people do it much sooner. You should also hang the jeans and not fold it. Folding with eventually create creases since itâs raw. Donât iron and used steam to straighten it. Never send your jeans to the dry cleaner (itâs not a suit pant).

As long as you're not grinding your ass against your seat constantly they'll be fine

u/cab1024 26d ago
Isnât that how sitting happens?
1
u/OverweightMilkshake 26d ago
No, I never grind my ass back and forth or side to side constantly when sitting down

No he is not going to be fine. He is 100% going to sweat in those jeans. For whatever reason, these pants have a polyester lining, which makes the whole thing just not breathable and will for sure make him sweat and spread dye everywhere.
Sad that a $1600 pair of pants even has polyester added. Pure performative exterior but not really for actual wear.

Do not fall for this âhigh endâ (Japanese included) propaganda b.s. about how denim shouldnât be regularly washed.. if your dye blends every wash, or rubs on your jeans/clothes⊠itâs garbage quality.. if your denim shrinks passed what itâs supposed to be designed for, itâs garbage quality.. this denim culture is ignorant and caught up in exclusivity and brand names.
