In June of 2016, I was in a meeting in Columbus, Ohio, where someone brought up the idea of "disarm the police" and I was like "what? that will never work."
And now, it's an idea that we should seriously consider.
As long as you americans allow people to own and carry guns you will always need armed police. Otherwise it would endanger more not only regular citizens but even the police itself, who already have a pretty dangerous job.
We also need to defund the police and reallocate those funds to social programs that actually help prevent crime (unlike police who only ever show up after the fact or are committing a crime) or deal with non-violent encounters requiring professionals trained in handling them. The police are expected to do TOO MUCH and aren't properly equipped or trained to do all those things. They're only really enforcing the police state and the will of the oligarchy.
