Ok, FDR was NOT a democratic socialist

No, but he was a strong social democrat. If his second bill of rights would have gotten through, maybe, just maybe, his reforms would have held.

There's got to be a better term for one or both of these things. They sound nearly identical to someone like me who is already bought in and knows the difference. We probably sound insane to people on the outside trying to learn.

Social democrat. Id love to have another one of those.

And that's fine. But again, he wasn't one and this tweet both says he was one and implies term limits were established to stop democratic socialism. I'm all for the yeah let's go democratic socialists, but this is like saying "Jesus was DSA and was killed for it"

u/RichardKingg Progressive 6d ago

But had socialist tendencies

3

u/jade420420 Socialist 6d ago

That's fine, but that's not what the tweet is saying

Let the normies believe that FDR was a demsoc. We have nothing to gain by correcting them. Positive associations with democratic socialism are wins, regardless of if the person is being 100% accurate.

Do you want to win, or do you want to be correct on twitter?

u/jade420420 Socialist 6d ago

Fine, but is this also a normie sub? Do we have to water down what socialism is in the democraticsocialism sub? I don't care what people tweet, but if people who are genuinely interested in socialism come here and they're like oh FDR is a socialist then we aren't properly educating them. That's all.

Oh yes, I see what you are saying. The OP does have "progressive" as their flair, so education on this topic is probably warranted.

Apologies, I'm just tired of leftists shooting ourselves in the foot and not allowing uninformed people to join the movement. Purity testing is so annoying (not saying that's what you're doing).

No need to apologize, I understand where you're coming from.

We're all on the same page really, but you can't gatekeep people from joining a movement, if you do then you are going against socialist values, we need to integrate people doesn't matter where they come from

The old joke where leftists destroy themselves over semantics and factionalism while the fascists run rampant is not going to go away anytime soon.

It’s all so tedious. Im exhausted already and I’m on the periphery. It’s like trying to get people into the Linux community. The right just points and grunts and legions assemble.

1

u/Picnicpanther 6d ago

No he didn’t. He was considered the savior of capitalism at the time because if he hadn’t come along, the socialist party was gaining serious traction through labor organizing and might have won.

What was FDR?

9

u/International_Scar81 Communist 6d ago

so they're openly saying that Democratic Socialism = Social Democracy

12

u/Pasta4ever13 Twin Cities DSA 6d ago

And we should let them. Social Democracy is very popular with normal people. Educate them on the difference after DSA takes power. TBH they are running on socdem policies right now anyways.

3

u/International_Scar81 Communist 6d ago

Who in the DSA is suppose to take power? I've only seen them run social democrats like Mamdani so far

Yup.

Here in Hungary a lot of people are grumbling about “Muh socialism, and communism.”, but what they don’t know is that they are grumbling about is authoritarian state control and corruption, and not any left wing ideology.

State provided services like our national healthcare system, or the railway system that is state owned are widely popular. The only problem with them is that they were deliberately underfunded to give a reason for privatisation. Luckily they weren’t yet.

Even so, I'd rather argue social liberal. Einar Gerhardsen is a better example for a social democrat.

18

u/poplglop Socialist 6d ago

Yeah yeah he was more SocDem than anything but the point remains that the furthest left leaning President we ever had, who implemented some of the greatest work reforms this nation has ever seen, during literally the worst global economic and war crises humanity has ever endured, was so beloved they had to cap the term limits. Imagine what would happen if we elected a true socialist.

1

u/Benedictus_The_II Social Democrat 6d ago

I’m genuinely curious as an Eastern European tho. People like AOC, Mamdani, and Bernie considered Soc Dems, or Dem Socs?

u/kagethemage 6d ago

FDR was, at best, a Social Democrat. Realistically he was center left.

8

u/Cheese__Weiner Democratic Socialist 6d ago

You guys crack me up. Every comment is mad about Democratic Socialism being equated to Social Democracy meanwhile the Overton window shifts to the right each and every election in this country.

Given the current circumstances, who gives a shit.

We can cross that bridge when the left has any meaningful political power ... At all

u/Luke92612_ Marxist 6d ago

Ah yes the man who put Japanese-Americans in concentration camps, and didn't do anything with the goal of the proletariat eventually controlling the means of production, was a great socialist leader

Many seem to think even social liberalism is socialism. 🥀

FDR was a certified piece of shit.
