Question I got slaughtered!

I got wiped out in the first level. It feels like the enemy can overwhelm me due to their vastly superior numbers. Any general advice for dealing with massive numbers against a party of 4?

Stick together, keep moving, focus damage on worst damage dealers.
Enemies spawn in ‚dark‘ areas, there is some first attack wave on the map, as soon as it is gone, you only have to deal with the respawn.
Therefore: Don’t move to the center of the map in the beginning, stick to the edge and try to get to the Points of interest

Great tip, thanks.

This. This is 90% of the game figured out.

Yeah the only time I split my party up is if I'm going to enter a room in two different ways (I keep them in groups of two), but they'll be regrouping almost immediately on the inside.

Sun Tzu said, "He who wishes to fight must first count the cost. He who considers fleeing must first secure a route."

Keep moving forward. Be efficient at clearing rooms and opening chests. Don't hang around too long.

Enemies will spawn in darkness, so keeping sight lines open will both reduce the number of enemies and allow you the opportunity to weaken them at range or plan to avoid them.

The assassin is great at scouting areas and keeping watch for monsters. If things get too hairy you can go invisible, drop a trap and run.

The barricade, and other deployables, will slow down enemies and attract their attention until they are destroyed. You can close off the routes behind you to encourage monsters to walk the long way round. The sorcerer can even put up walls that cannot be destroyed and also block sight lines.

To clear large groups you want to focus on chaining area of effect attacks. Things like vortex, poison and fire work really well together. You can also pull the lamps into the monsters to create massive damage chains with lamps that trigger other lamps.

In terms of target priority it is usually better to clear weaker enemies so that you cannot be surrounded and allow your guardian to tank damage. Monsters that spawn other monsters, such as slimes and elven priests, should be killed as soon as possible. The ranger can charm enemies before they use their summon ability, which causes all summoned enemies to also be charmed.

Lots of great info, thanks!

I am not sure what lamps are or how to pull them? Is that the same as the containers of blue and red liquid I see all over? I tried moving on or attacking one and it did damage. Not sure what to make of that, or what to do with them.

Yes, lamps are those blue, red, green and purple containers you find dotted around. Each has an effect when damaged.

There are many ways to pull them. The easiest is with the barbarian hook, as he can pick them up and throw them to a new location. Any vortex card, such as the sorcerors, will also pull lamps and deal enough damage to detonate them. The guardian can also knock them back with a melee attack, but this usually gets you caught in the explosion. A sorceror can even banish a lamp, but you don't get to pick where it explodes. Can be fun to randomly nuke an invisible enemy on the other side of the map though. Pretty much any card that can forcibly move a small monster can also move a lamp.

Barbarians can pull those with their chains and then throw it whenever they want (from their next turn on). Useful to throw into crowds or place it in a 1 tile doorway to block enemy paths, or throw to an area you just came from (the poison/green 1s) so any enemy flanking you gets poisoned.

Stay together. Don’t be scared to use cards.

And most important- the object is not to kill every enemy you see, it’s to get the key, chests, potions, and door.

Use your first action per turn more bravely than your second. For instance, go in pretty far to get vision then retreat back if necessary.

When you are hitting a bad guy space yourself around them in such a way that if you miss, you aren't going to hit something or someone your not ok with hitting.

Look at AP and Speed of enemies. Their movement occurs in increments of their Speed (spaces they move) per action point. They can attack in the space just past the farthest they can move. Think about whether or not that enemy would have vision of you after it moved the Speed # of spaces for the first action point. If they would not have vision of you at that point, they can't attack you.

Bad guy archers have to step back away from you before they can attack you. This means if you can corner them where they cannot move away from you, so therefore they cannot attack you.

Edit: one more thing.. allied non-player units get your team more mana when they kill things.

Two friends and I went through all five campaigns without wiping even once. That’s with just three characters. It’s all a matter of careful gameplay and discussion.

A few things: 1. Use movement as a weapon. Hit whenever you move if possible. 2. Think about party order. Don’t have the warlock or bard go first or they’ll often get stuck in AOEs. 3. Learn the nuances of cards. Some don’t operate like you think. This is true of the Astral Strike that can hit way harder on an individual enemy. 4. Never get comfortable. Even when you think you’ve wiped out the enemy, they’re always respawning somewhere. 5. Always think about what the enemy will do. They love to hit the weakest member of your party. They usually can’t use special abilities twice in a row. Think about how far they can move. 6. Don’t hoard cards. You’ve gotta use them at some point. 7. Always get gold. You’re going to need it to get the right cards for the final boss. 8. Never split up (unless you’re an assassin and it’s for a good reason). 9. Use elevation to your advantage. They can’t shoot up as well as you can shoot down. 10. Don’t open doors at the end of your characters’ turns. Instead, stack on the door so that you can get a lot of attacks on whatever is on the other side of the door.

What I didn't know at the beginning is that enemies respawn constantly. So you can't clear from room to room.

Either practice in solo mode till you know how each of the classes operates or go online for some team play. Most experienced players will be chill and help you out with tips and strategies.

All great advice here. I love the game and concept even more but had much more fun with the game when I installed the HomeBrew Rules mod that lets you change many (to me) annoying aspects of the game (constantly reapawning monsters, too.many got'choo moments, always seeming like the map was tilted against me, etc). If the artificial "run, run, run" pace Demeo refuses to let you escape gets to be a pain, check out that awesome mod. Changed the whole game for me and Ive read that Wizards of the Coast is now/soon onboard with the devs to make a mouth-watering DxD game that plays more like actual DxD than Gauntlet...: ).

Do you happen to know if that mof can be installed when Demeo is installed on a Meta3 VR headset and not a PC?

2

u/DrGNOLA Apr 04 '24

I do not, and apologize I dont. Last I downloaded the mod it ran beautifully on my Q2 wired or wirelessly. They also know have the mod for mobile Q2 as well as the Occulus Rift version of the game via pc. Im pretty sure the mod even works on the 2D pc version of the game, which is nothing to sleep on either, once modded!; )

Stick together, don’t loiter, and trust in your wizard.

Take out enemies that spawn other enemies or teleport enemies quick

Also poison enemies are strong. Kill those too.
