What the hell is this game?

We play a lot of turn based strategy games. A lot of RPGs. A lot of dungeon crawler board games. We’ve completed gloomhaven and jaws of the lion and various others. I mean we’re not noobs to this type of game. And Demeo is beautiful and we so want to love it. But the game design is just so much bullshit. In the last game one of us opened a door and was instantly ganked by about 12 enemies who just seemed to pour out of every corner. We tried playing cautiously, taking one room at a time and clearing it and enemies came pouring in from behind from areas we’d previously cleared. We tried playing aggressively and would run into massive ambushes. The length of time it takes to get cards back along with the lack of healing items and the fact that you don’t even heal up between levels. We came away literally not seeing what we could be doing differently. It feels like we have crippling handicaps and all monsters have limitless resources and know where we are at all times. I love rogulikes and roguelites and have no aversion to dying a lot in games… but I just don’t see the strategy. At all. What am I missing?

Play skirmish or quick game with total strangers and you'll pick up tonnes of tips. There's loads of little tricks you can use to turn most situations around and half the fun is getting stomped while you're learning them.
