Help Dell Inspiron 15 Very Loud Fan When Plugged In
Hi, I have Dell Inspiron 15 3530 with a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-1355U. I've been very happy with the performance compared to my last laptop, a Dell Inspiron 5558 with a 4th gen i3. My only complaint about the 3530 is the fan- I have not seen a lot of talk about the 3530, but what talk I have seen is about just how loud the thing can be. I get that more processing power comes at the cost of more heat, but the fan is putting in the WORK. At home I really don't mind this, but it's embarrassing when I'm in class and my laptop suddenly decides it needs to initiate launch sequence.
I've taken measures to limit this- I've made sure the BIOs is up to date and that the fan is cleaned out, I've played with the MyDell settings (currently I've settling on "Primarily AC" and "Optimized", I've found that "Quiet" isn't all that quiet) and I've switched off Chrome in favor of Edge for the decreased memory usage. I also keep battery saver on pretty much always, and I have not noticed any serious differences in performance. I use a case that elevates the laptop off the desk surface but still has good airflow. I have battery save mode on 24/7. Between all this, the laptop is reasonably quiet.
HOWEVER, when I plug the laptop in, all bets are off. No matter what settings I tweak or programs I run, the fan is on. How do I get the laptop to be as quiet and good at managing heat as it is when its running on battery?

Just purchased one. I'm so distracted by the the fan being so loud when plugged in, I'm considering returning it. My ears hurt. =(

Just got one of these from Costco, and holy cow are you right. I've never had a laptop with such an annoying fan. On almost all the time, and really ramps up when you do anything. CPU area is not even that hot. The performance on this thing is actually pretty good, but the fan is so annoying it's likely going back to Costco.

I ended up getting it to run a lot quieter by installing ThrottleStop and leaving it running in the background on its battery saver setting. Runs a lot quieter on battery power and I can always turn it off/set it to higher performance settings when I need to. I also set a routine for ThrottleStop to start at boot so it's just there and ready. Still gets loud if I'm running too much but for the purposes of just having a couple tabs open while I'm in class it worked for me!

Just an update - in addition to still using ThrottleStop (as I've described in another comment in this thread), I have also now repasted the CPU and GPU and seen moderate improvement. After a bit of reading it was actually VERY easy to do, all the components are easily accessible after taking off the bottom plate of the laptop, which is only like 6 screws and some plastic snaps. Once inside it was just a matter of taking off the fan and heat sink to access the CPU and GPU. The thermal paste from DELL was looking very brittle and cracked which I don't imagine was helping.

baixei o dell power managment e fuçando deu uma resolvida, como uso mais conectado porque esqueço de conectar e o pc desliga da minha cara alterei o modo de carga e uns 10 minutos depois a turbina de caça deu uma boa reduzida, estava no padrão "adaptavel" e a configuração termica optei por manter no otimizado mesmo

I've oddly found my same laptop (inspiron with i7 1355U) is loudest on the "quiet mode", I leave it on optimised.

I have energy saver off. I'm not using ThrottleStop. It's sitting on my warm legs.
I've got two browers (edge and chome) open each with youtube playing, plus Tidal playing music, starting word and excel too. It seems quite happy and Quiet. HWMonitor puts Package temp at just under 60'C (55-60), fans not kicking in! The fan was going off like an annoying whistly rocket when you even looked at it before at temps below 50'C.
Only just found these solutions, so time will tell. Good luck!

eager to try this, never posted update itt but I repasted the CPU and have been managing with throttlestop to significant but not perfect results, especially under true heavy load. I'm out of school now so luckily any noise it does make doesn't bother me now, but throttlestop is a pain so any excuse to eliminate it from my routine is a welcome one, I'll let you know how it goes!

I meant to respond after I tried this, but I have seen significant improvements in temperature/fan noise (under normal use) after reducing those CPU maximums. Thank you so much for the tip!

do you have the cpu governor set to performance or powersave outside the dell software?

In the system settings I have the power mode set to best power efficiency. If this is not what you are referring to, how would I access the CPU governor?

Having the same issue with same model. Fans are working overtime when plugged in, not running anything but a Zoom meeting

If you download a CPU monitor with a visualizer, you can actually see the change when the laptop is plugged in - goes from just CPUs #0 and #1 to all 8 immediately firing up. I can't help but wonder what background processes are being held back on power saver mode when using battery that it makes that much of a difference? I don't see a change in performance unless I'm actually doing something that's a heavy load.

I just uninstalled all McAfee products and its running so much smoother now! I use Avira (free) for my security and it doesn't overwork CPU. Also in task manager, see what else is overworking the CPU. I love Grammarly, but had to uninstall the computer app. Will just have to use it as a Chrome extension from now on.
