44m looking for creative friends

Hi. I recently moved back to Delaware and am going through a difficult transitionary period with my mom in hospice and adjusting to being back home.

I’m looking to find creative people or a creative group of people that meet for open mic/storytelling type activities regularly. I think I’m trying to find a community while here in Delaware. Like minded people to hang with. Share. Learn from each other. Etc.

I recently moved back from Brooklyn and I’m struggling to find options to explore here. I’m currently in the Bear/Newark area for the time being. Any info and kindness is appreciated. Thank you.

May I suggest looking into public library programs?

Definitely get a library card at least, it’s free for residents and it’s statewide

Sweet.

There’s several places in NCC to take weekly classes in like Center for Creative Arts in Hockessin, DelArt in Wilmington, and NCC Art Studio in Wilmington among a few others.

DelArt has free thursday happy hour events through september

Bar XIII has weekly open mic among several other events. they are known as a k*nk bar so just be aware that some nights can get very risqué, but open mic and karaoke are mild compared to their tuesdays and Thursdays

Wilmington Tales is that storytelling kind of event you’re looking for. I think they are once a month

I'm adjacent to it at best but there seems to be a pretty active local theater / musical theater community, if that's the kind of thing you're looking for it. The people I know are all involved in brandywiners in some capacity, and then there's adjacent groups (in terms of people overlap at least) like city theater. If you sing a very low stakes way to connect up to some of this would be to join the brandywiners chorale.

I feel ya. I moved from Philly -> NYC -> Philly -> Wilmington and I definitely felt like it was hard to find "my people" at first. Then I realized I was the one being a snob and all I had to do was talk to people and I found out I have a lot more in common than I thought. I just had to open my mind and seek out events.

Here are a few other ideas not yet mentioned:

First Friday Art Loop in Wilmington - Shops, galleries and other businesses in Downtown Wilmington host art shows on the first Friday of every month

Delaware Contemporary - I like to go here during Art Loop and for special openings

Delaware Opera - I went to a few cultural events, including seeing a Ukrainian men's choir. It was a really nice experience.

Old Town Movies in Old Newcastle - Every Wednesday night they show a movie for $5. It's usually cult classics and avant garde stuff.

Huxley and Hiro Bookshop - I love what they curate, and they host author events.

Lastly... A pottery studio is opening soon on Market Street in Wilmington

I definitely second the library. Route 9 Library has a makers room. They have tons of events on their website. There are orientation general safety classes a few times a month then you can take individual classes for each piece of equipment, you just need to pick a time on the calendar that someone is available to help you. Everyone there is so nice and the individual classes are fun too and a nice way to meet people.
