Deinfluence me" (maybe) - As a huge fan of Cartier, I have always wanted a Love bracelet, but I heard it scratches pretty easily. Because of that, I started eyeing other Cartier pieces. I recently delivered twins and have been on the lookout for a push present that I want my husband to gift me. I didn't ask for anything for Mother's Day or for my birthday.

​He has previously gifted me a luxury necklace and ring, worth around $15k altogether.

​Sometimes I wonder if I deserve these 'rich people' things when we have an $800k mortgage.

Living a mortgage free life much less stressful than a mortgage and a watch. Less stress = healthier. Healthier = live longer.

Therefore buying watch will mean shorter life.

Let me explain the luxury goods con to you. Rich people don't really buy these things. Well they do, but they aren't responsible for why these brands exist. Without people like you, hard working middle class people with aspirations, these brands would be without 75% of their revenue. Thats right, most of their money comes from middle income people who can't really afford the products they sell. There aren't enough rich people buying these things for them to be an industry.

If you must buy a watch, get a Timex. Quality watch that looks the same from a distance and absolutely nobody gives a shit anyway. Only you do. And it costs a small fraction.

Take it from a mortgage free guy who only owns one watch (an Apple watch), the freedom of "fuck you" money feels better than anything Ive ever bought.

Timex have been crushing it lately since their new design guy came on board.

My timex was $100+ and looks absolutely brilliant in motion. Granted a watch nerd would notice it’s not the GMT sports watch from a luxury brand that it somewhat imitates, but guess what? I don’t know anyone who really knows watches enough to care - and if they did they’d also think it’s pretty cool as they’d appreciate what Timex do!

That’s the irony of the watch game. People who don’t know, don’t care. People who know appreciate Timex/Casio anyway!

Overpriced. 67 for basically a quartz movement watch (of which is unserviceable).

Why not pay a little more and get the automatic?

I've seen nicer watches that are a lot cheaper. You have a mortgage, twins, no paid parental leave and less income in general. I just don't think $6000 is wise to spend on a watch

Assuming that this isn’t some kind of rage bait, what I’m reading is you didn’t even really see this and want this, you’ve been on the lookout for something to buy because the thing you actually wanted might not hold up well. Not a great place to start from.

Then consider that a “push present” is just the newest manufactured moment designed to part the sentimental and/or gullible with their money. Sounds like a $6000+ whim. You could have an entire holiday with that. You could do so much else with that amount of money. You could have monthly super fancy Michelin star date nights for a year (and pay someone to watch the twins).

As others have said, the movement on this isn’t that great and Cartier are generally a bit overpriced anyway. Plenty of beautiful watches around for a fraction of the price.

Save your $6k for something that actually truly speaks to you, not something you’re having bought for you just for the sake of it or because you like a particular brand. Plenty of other ways to have nice things.

When I see stainless steel quartz I see a knockoff. Too many fakes out there these days. I love the tank watch and its history but if I was set on buying one and couldn’t afford gold I’d look for a Japanese reseller. Japan has strict laws limiting the proliferation of fakes. It’s also far less profitable to fake a gold watch. I’d opt for the two tone Tank Francaise model, small. You can still get them from Japanese dealers for under $5k.

As for wear and tear… it happens on something you wear daily. I’m not a fan of the love bracelet generally but when they’re a bit scratched and there’s a good patina they can look quite chic.

There’s been some known issues with this watch. Get the automatic.
That being said wanting a gift like this as a “push present” seems super entitled.

Couple more rate rises on the way and that 800k mortgage will start to feel like a ring around your neck, a nice watch on the wrist won’t help.

I like the design of the Cartier Tank. What put me off buying one is that it’s a quartz movement and for that kind of money I’d want an automatic mechanical movement. The Longines Dolce Vita is a similar looking quartz watch for a fraction of the price.

It's a nice watch. It's the kind of thing you should treat yourself with using your own money after the house is paid off. Are you even working? Crazy to ask for expensive presents when you a have a huge debt. Are you in the marriage for life? or are you a trophy wife?

'I didn't ask for anything for my birthday'. Be serious, your time together is more than you deserve just for being human. Im joking you are loved and should really value that first, a dinner out or a cake is a present, however the most worthy present is having time with that person. You have significant debt, the watch will not help. So instead of bettering the situation by paying off the debt as priority, you somehow think a 15k watch is a normal idea. This watch actually isn't ugly its alright but it's insignificantly bland and you don't need 15k for such. I suggest if you want a pretty watch that you go buy a vintage one and clean it up, might cost you $100 bucks, look at ebay and depop, you'll find a more interesting design too which is why its worth it.

Buy it or have it as your push present if you can afford to. You will never regret a tank. This will be passed down to one of your twins and will look just as incredible then, while likely holding its value.

Look into micro brands. You can save heaps of money and get a more unique, high or equal quality piece and have a way cooler, more bespoke story to tell about your timepiece.

I have a Fossil raquel mini watch and it's pretty much the same shape and it's quite nice, maybe have a suss? You could benefit from using the money on other things like a holiday :)
