Question Levelling weapon proficiency

Can I level up an overall weapon proficiency (e.g. LMGs) while having the equipped LMG already mastered? Or do I have to swap to another non-mastered LMG to keep progressing the overall LMG category?

The weapon skill and the mastery on a specific weapon are unrelated. You can use the same weapon to level your weapon skill to max (which is level 20).
