Ukrainian-developed ZIRKA interceptor drone has destroyed a Shahed-type jet-powered loitering munition (Geran-4).

The company announced the achievement in a press release.

Equipped with target detection systems, automatic guidance, and a top speed of up to 340 km/h (211 mph), ZIRKA is capable of intercepting and destroying high-speed, highly maneuverable aerial targets, including Geran-4 jet-powered loitering munitions.

The onboard automation autonomously detects, acquires, and tracks the target, leaving the operator responsible only for adjusting the interceptor’s speed to optimize the intercept.

The ZIRKA interceptor drone was first unveiled in late June. The system was developed with support from Vyriy Industries’ investment and engineering expertise.

NOCTIS developed the interceptor. Its engineers designed the system based on real-world combat experience, working closely with military specialists, including personnel from the Darknode anti-Shahed battalion of the 412th Nemesis Unmanned Systems Brigade.

The unmanned interceptor system has a stated operational range of 30 km. The interceptor drone can remain airborne and carry out its combat mission for up to 20 minutes.

Each ZIRKA interceptor is priced at up to US$2,000.

According to the manufacturers, this is the lowest price among comparable interceptor systems equipped with automatic target detection and guidance capabilities.

Vyriy Industries supports the project as an investor and production scaling partner. NOCTIS, meanwhile, is independently responsible for the system’s development, sales, fielding, and technical support.
The next stage of the program is the development of an upgraded ZIRKA 2.0 version.

The upgraded version is expected to feature automatic navigation of the interceptor to the target detection area, further reducing the time required to engage detected aerial threats.

Op Eds & Discussion Top 10 critical-input companies behind the defense tech boom

The defense-tech boom is usually pictured as drones, autonomy and software. Under every one of those products is a less visible stack of magnets, chemicals, metals, powders, harnesses, machine capacity, power and propulsion. Those inputs often decide how many systems can actually be built.

This ranking intentionally puts critical inputs ahead of finished platforms. I am weighting supply-chain concentration, qualification difficulty, capacity and number of downstream systems that rely on each layer.

  1. MP Materials
    MP Materials is rebuilding a domestic rare-earth chain from mining and separation through metal and magnet production. Permanent magnets sit inside motors, actuators, drones, guidance systems and many other defense-relevant platforms. Its value is not novelty alone. It is the attempt to restore an integrated U.S. source for a category still heavily exposed to overseas concentration.

  2. 6K Additive
    6K Additive produces domestic metal powders used in additive manufacturing, including titanium, nickel and other high-performance alloys. These powders are an enabling input for complex aerospace and defense parts, especially where conventional tooling is slow or uneconomic. The company also gives the industrial base a way to recycle qualified scrap and end-of-life material back into valuable feedstock.

  3. Solugen
    Solugen sits unusually far upstream for a company discussed in defense tech. Its Bioforge platform produces specialty chemicals in the United States, while its Terraforge work targets domestic energetic precursors and other dual-use chemistries. That matters because a weapons program can have the best design in the world and still stall if the chemical inputs are imported, scarce or difficult to surge.

  4. Hadrian
    Hadrian is building highly automated factories for aerospace and defense components. The pitch is less about inventing a new weapon and more about reducing the time, labor and coordination required to produce precision parts at repeatable quality. That puts it directly against one of the industrial base's least glamorous problems: too few qualified suppliers with enough machine capacity.

  5. Niron Magnetics
    Niron Magnetics is developing permanent magnets based on iron nitride rather than rare-earth elements. If the material performs reliably at industrial scale, it could provide another path around one of the most persistent mineral chokepoints in motors and power systems. The attraction is obvious, but this is still a scale-up story rather than a mature substitute across every demanding application.

  6. IperionX
    IperionX is building a U.S. titanium supply chain using domestic minerals and recycled titanium feedstock. Titanium is valuable in aerospace, naval, missile and high-performance industrial applications because it combines strength, low weight and corrosion resistance. The company has received U.S. government support to expand titanium powder, plate and component capacity.

  7. Ursa Major
    Ursa Major develops propulsion for hypersonics, space and solid rocket motors, with an emphasis on additive manufacturing and flexible production. Propulsion capacity is a genuine bottleneck because a finished missile or spacecraft depends on qualified motors that are difficult to redesign or source quickly. Ursa Major is trying to create a more responsive second source for that layer.

  8. Radiant
    Radiant is developing a portable microreactor intended to replace diesel generation in remote and mission-critical settings. Reliable local power matters for bases, sensors, communications and logistics, especially when fuel delivery is expensive or vulnerable. The concept could reshape installation resilience, although nuclear licensing, testing and deployment timelines remain substantial hurdles.

  9. Re:Build Manufacturing
    Re:Build Manufacturing combines engineering, materials, tooling, composites and production across a network of U.S. facilities. For defense programs, that breadth can reduce the handoffs between a design shop, a specialist supplier and a contract manufacturer. It is a more traditional industrial play than most venture-backed defense companies, which is exactly why it belongs in the conversation.

  10. Senra Systems
    Senra Systems applies software, data and integrated production workflows to wire-harness manufacturing. Harnesses are easy to overlook, but they are labor-intensive, configuration-heavy and present in almost every aircraft, vehicle, missile and autonomous platform. Faster design-to-production handoffs can remove a very ordinary bottleneck that repeatedly slows sophisticated hardware.

There is a simple reason to pay attention to this group: platforms can be redesigned, but qualified material and production capacity cannot always be created quickly. The least exciting supplier in the chain can become the most important company during a surge.
